Question 5-speed power issues?

Can a stock five speed with an upgraded cluctc hold up to 450-500 rwhp, I have heard that the input shaft is the weak spot has anybody ever broke one?

Lots of people have broken them but as long as you don't do some insane launches under 600hp the input shaft will probably last, well also factor in exhaust brakes as they can kill a input shaft with a high power motor and repetitive positive and negative torque on it. Yes I'd agree the input shaft is the weak spot but they aren't incredibly common to fail, much more likely to have a wandering 5th gear nut.

I believe the inside will grenade first. I know mine did. I was towing 15K with 407 HP and my input was just fine. I run the con o clutch. I've replaced the tranny 5 times and have yet to break the input shaft. Normal use and driving, you're ok. Drag race or snach the hell out of it and "thar she blows".

i ripped my input in two at 50 mph in 4th gear. the truck was spinning and sliding a bit through a big corner. sliped and grabbed 2 or 3 times then snap. and this was when i was at 400 hp or so. so beware, my clutch has never grabbed well enough from a start to hurt the input. i just can't justify the money for a billet input, so i am just going to a 5600 to be done with it. mike

the 1 3/8 seems bullit proof , but then the mainshaft will let go on them. i know there are someguys running big power through them[sheids, and the other pullers] but for what it cost to make a 4500 live i decided just to go to the 5600 6 speed. mike

I just asked, I was offered a DD clutch with big input, and wondered if I could break it

That clutch gives me an awful lot of room to grow
