5 speed to 6 speed..... Change-out

I was curious what was involved in changing out a 99 5-speed (in 1994 12v) to the newer 5400 6- speed? Thanks , sonny

The clutch and flywheel, along with shorter rear drive shaft, and longer front shaft

Oh, and don't forget the little button in the end of the shifter......It has an extra number

You have a couple of options for the clutch, SBC has a convert clutch that uses the same flywheel or has a redrilled flywheel to mount the larger clutch. I used the latter.

The stick portion of the nv4500 will fit but the actual shifter bolted to the transmission with four bolts will not. The rear mount will be in the wrong place with the right crossmember. A 1/4 steel plate about 6 x 8 with the proper holes drilled will mount it up.

My drive shafts were modified 6 inches, where I usually see 5 1/2 listed as the length. The shifter link for the transfer case will have to be cut and lengthened the six inches.

I never got the exhaust bracket at the rear mount to line up so did not put it on. I have never had a problem with it, I have a straight pipe.

The backup light wiring is in a different place but will mount up with no changes.

If you are converting a 2 wheel drive truck, the Dodge 6 speed has no provision for speedometer drive. You can swap in a '98 or later crossmember if available or make a mount as Haulin' said.
