I am thinking of installing a 5" exhaust system on my 01 quad cab. I have always performed all of my repairs and built my own engines but have not worked with the exhaust system. I plan to go from the turbo back and was wondering if it is that difficult to install with a prebent kit. Thanks for any info.

 

Really depends on how good of a kit you get. I would think that if you have built engines, installing an exhaust should be a breeze. The 4" downpipe can be a pain (mine wouldnt clear the transmission).

 

If you get the right kit, it should bolt right up. Like the Evil Dr said, the down pipe is kind of a pain to get bolted on. Without more mods you won't see any performance gains with the 5 inch. I realize it looks cool, but save some money and go with a 4 inch system.

I installed my 5" and it was like wrestling a Boa Constrictor! Everything lined up correct to the spare but it was a pain keeping the spare tire installed. I would pay someone next time. My 5" wasn't anymore than a 4.

 

CMP chips sells a decent price 5" system. I have had it on my 24v and 12v

the sound is awesome!

 

I bought my 5" system off of ebay pretty cheap really, mostly because I didn't buy a muffler with it just straight pipe. Mine went on in a breeze super easy, even my 4" downpipe went on easily, you have to get it just right or it will viberate on the frame rail or the trans. But I love my system, it is so much louder, you get alot more grunt with the 5" system.

 

You can get MBRP system on ebay reasonably priced under $450 shipped

 

I agree with wurkenman, 4 inch is sufficient for these engines, no problem to install. I got an MBRP kit off Larry on this site for 345 bucks delivered. comes with a 5 inch stainlesstip. I run diesels with 1500 horse and they only have 8 inch exhaust, 5 inch is really cool but unnecessary overkill

4" turbo back MBRP $259.98 with muffler delete shipped to your door. I looked around a lot and this was the best deal I found for a 4". I installed this on a buddy's 00' and the hardest thing was waiting for the old downpipe to cool down after he drove to my house. With a couple sawzall blades and some beer you can get it done in an hour and a half or so. 5" looks cool but if you just do a 4" and get a bigger tip it's not like anyone would notice anyway - there are no gains of a 5" over a 4" since it's restricted at the downpipe anyway. Save your money

I got the summit 5" and tucked it all up above the frame. Fits great and sounds good. Easy install.

 

I just bought my 5" exhaust from Diesel Dawgs for 309.95 shipped to my door. It is an Expandit exhaust kit, and I am told they are the ones that make them for the other manufactures. I went with 5" because I like the deeper tone. Just my 0.02 cents.....

 

I am 70 yrs old and just got finished stuffing a complete custom system under. I installed my HX-40 that has been in the box over a year first, then came the 4" down pipe, next I used a 5" to 4" adapter I had picked up, going into a 51" long, 5" semi Muffler, then made a weed burner out of the end. The major secret is to semi tighten components as you go, so at the end you can do the lining up. I also had to make the custom hangers, using some of the stock components. Sound great, not real noisy like straights, I'm sure no back pressure, but now I need some injectors. I have new 330 Hp Marines that I can install, but I hear spray pattern is different on Marine than our truck engines. But still may install unless I can find a better deal.
SO, go for it!! But these guys are right, unless you have a bunch of horse power, 4" inch is all that is needed. I just happen to have all these parts that I put together.
