4X4 at the Drag Strip

Going to 1/4 strip for first time...Street racer day for anyone. My question is do you guys in 4x4 stay in 4x4? Any harm done at 90mph-100mph with 4x4 Engaged? Will it disengage without coming off throttle? Any do's or don'ts for most fun and best results at track?

I launch in 4x4 and just as soon as it hits 2nd gear, shift out, with the skinny pedal still on the metal. It must disengage because when I turn on the frontage road there is no front wheel hop. I suppose you could leave it engaged the whole way but seems as tho it would create quite of bit of additional drag.

I've tried it a couple of times on the hwy...doesn't disengage till I lift my right foot.
From what you have said...you have never had problems? Based on your signature you must be over 90 in the qtr?

I always do what racer does....Launch at 25psi 4wd then when it hits 33psi in 2nd I switch back to 2wd.

Do you have a billet output shaft? or input for that matter? If the output is not billet, do not take it past 15psi on the launch. When I first went to the strip with my truck years ago, first few times left it in 4wd the whole way......it ran decent enough. THen I started shifting out of 4wd after getting into 2nd gear, ran even better.

On an automatic equipped truck, even if you move the 4x lever back, the 4x4 system will stay engaged until you filt your foot off the throttle.

Thanks guys. I guess there is no harm done from high speed 4x4!

Kat - No billet...was already advised to keep it under 8-10 psi. Tried it once or twice on the street...it's enough for my purposes but need the 4x4 to keep from spinning the rear tires.

Doing this for fun...and because my truck dynos 10% below where I am almost positive it is...HP wise. If no wind, qtr mile times/speed should be positive test.

rjohnson,,,if youre `02 is like the rest of ours,,without a bd antidefueler, you wont do any good trying to build more boost than about 12 to 15 anyways.soon as you launch it,,itll fall flat on its face, then come back up and take off.its really aggravating, but it does keep you from breaking parts.the lower boost launch will reap better times than the defueling stumble as it is,,..and on the 4wd deal,,ive gone right at 99mph with mine with no problems as of yet.......bama

rjohnson,
When and where are you going to run?

Some of the guys in Waco this weekend are going to get together at Ennis sometime soon.

RJohnson, don't know if you were addressing me or not with regard to never having any problems but if you were, I can tell you I have had no problems (knock on wood) and have run at 101+. Also, if Mike R. says that it doesn't actually disengage till you let off of the throttle, then I believe him. I don't let off of the throttle till I pass the 1/4 pole!

Going to Ardmore, Ok track on the 4th.
Please let me know when it's happening at Ennis..thought they were closed...that's what they told me last month?

Bama, thanks..It can't be rpm defueling??... something else..not familiar with it but think I experienced it once while testing. It loaded up on me...thought it was cause I had A/c on???

Thumper...Other than Output Shaft, what are weak areas to watch out for.

rjohnson,

One of the guys in Waco called (I don't know when) and was told they were racing on Friday nights.

I'll PM this thread to him and see if they want to come to Ardemore. It's only about an hour further.

The track in Ennis has a test n tune on friday nights...I think the cost is 15 dollars to race. There are a few of us (10 or so) that are going to try to make it up there sometime in September. I might be there sooner, but it all depends on how fast my new turbo gets here. Come on down if you feel like hanging out with some Texans...
