Post 47RE Upgrade Recommendations

Hello All,

In my last post, I found that I have a 47RE automatic transmission in my truck. In reading the threads found on this forum, I have learned that they are not the most “ideal” transmissions for the Cummins power. Many people have suggested replacing the stock torque converter and the valve bodies on these transmissions to help them out.
I am taking this advice, but when I was looking around for these products, I was overwhelmed at the amount of choices out there!
Can any one recommend some brands and companies that they have had good experiences with as far as components as well as value? I admit that I am out of my league here. I bought the Cummins diesel power to tow my Bobcat and Yanmar B37 mini excavator. All in all, about 10,000 pounds when bringing the equipment to the job site. Also, am I taking the right steps in replacing the converter and valve body, or should I be concentrating on other areas of the transmissions.
Thanks for any help or suggestions.
My Best, Greg

I second Dave Goerend, and DTT or suncoast would probably be my 2nd choice. It seems Dave Goerend has the best prices, and definatley warranties on his products. Im pretty sure his triple disc converter is $1200, and i know that is has a LIFETIME warranty on it. You are concentrating on the right areas. A good valve body, and shift kit will really help your tranny. Daves Goerends site is www.gbtransmissions.com so give him a call/email ; discuss what you want power wise, and what your truck is/what you do with it with him, and he can point you in the right direction for as cheap as possible. Hes a straight up guy that will answer any question you have.

Thanks for the replies. I posted this in the wrong area and it was moved to here.
I sent an e-mail to Dave Goerend and am waiting for a reply. More than a few people here have recommended him, so I'd like to hear what he has to say. Life time warrenty sounds good to me! Thanks again.

Smile Dave Goerend

I picked up the phone and called Dave Goerend today because I probably had more questions than he would have liked to answer in an e-mail.

He was very polite and answered all my questions and then some!

I told him that I e-mailed him and to delete them when he checks his in-box.
As it stands, I will give him my business....this guy knows his stuff and had very good customer relations.

That's the Dave I know! He wants you to become knowledgable about what to expect in performance, what is going to happen inside your tranny, and what it will cost based on your NEEDS & WANTS. I find it facinating, but I'm an old gear head.

did he have you draw some diagrams? I love that stuff. I would never understand how the tranny shifts when it does if it were not for those diagrams.

Dave's great!
You also have a DTT installer in your area with an excellent reputation. Mass Diesel .... http://www.massdiesel.com/

Unless your a transmission mechanic or have a great local shop, I feel local service can be worth a lot. They are in Walpole, which may or may not be local?
You will get quality service and great performance from either Georand Bros or DTT.
Really can't go wrong either way.

A valve body & converter will work for you if not towing heavier then you mention; most important thing is setting pressures and balancing system properly. A fully rebuilt tranny would serve you better...and longer.
I have often thought that my custom rebuilt tranny was the single nicest mod I ever added to my CTD! I'm sure you will love your upgrades also.

Good Luck!

RJ

A new TC and VB are a step in the right direction, but NOT the stand alone answer. You have to eliminate internal leakage in the tranny before it's going to live long and be healthy. Whoever you decided to go with, ask them how they address the problem of internal leakage in the stock tranny. Then make your mind up who to use once you are better informed.

The 47re Can Surely Be Helped With A Torque Converter And Valve Body. The Real Problem With The 47re Lies In The 2-3 Shift Timing And Rear Aluminum Planet Carrier And Thrust Washer Which Is A Steel Plate. These Issues Have To Be Addressed Before Having A "bulletproof" Trans. Internal Leakage Is Also An Issue, But The 47 Re Also Has Mechanical And Electronic Control. The Clutches And Servos Have Mechanical Springs For Release And The Pcm Controls
Gov Line Rise, O/d, And Tcc Operation. You Have To Take Into Account All Of These Controlling Factors When Trying To Upgrade The Cummins Automatic.

Why do you feel the rear aluminum planets are a problem? If the tranny is built right the rear planets will have no problem at well over 600hp. Tim
