3rd Gen turbo on 2nd Gen?
3rd Gen turbo on 2nd Gen?
Here is an ebay listing for a 3rd gen turbo complete with manifold.

Just wondering if a guy could bolt up this turbo with only minor modifications to the piping going to the intercooler, and of course a 3rd gen down pipe.
Probably cool more fuel than my taxed HX 35, but I'm wondering how it will spool. If this turbo is better than a new HX 40, I might try it.

Theres lots of us making over 525 RWHP with this bottleneck! Yes its smaller than the 12 on the hx, but flows lots better and exits a full 4" rather than 3". It would wake up a 235hp motor any day, being thier on a 90 hp more stock engine to begine with. They spool nice
I don't think it would work because the 3rd gen manifold bolts the turbo lower toward the frame rail than 2nd gens. You would have to custom build a downpipe to fit or get a 3rd gen downpipe. The turbo also is electronically wastegated on 3rd gens. I'm not saying it can't be done, but not worth the effort.
This one is off an 04 so the compressor is smaller, 57mm I believe. Since it is off an 04 you dont have to fool with the electronic wastegate.
You don't have to use the 3rd gen manifold with it either. It'll mount to a 2nd gen manifold.
I wouldn't really go for it but I think it would be an improvement in performance if a big power increase isn't planned. I don't think it would be ideal for the original poster from looking at the mods on the truck.
Also that turbo is an HE341 not an HY35. Stock turbos for 3rd gen trucks are the HE341 for 03-04 and the HE351 for 04.5 and up 5.9's.

all 5.9 up to 07 the WG is still worked off of boost till 07 6.7. some had a electronic solinoid that let boost spike then would back off for the constent boost. I have 2 in my shed right now. Yoy can take the electic part off and just use an elbow and it will work fine. The down side is that you cant re clock the comp housing becose the WG actuator is mounted to it. here are some pics L-M-R is 3rd gen - 2nd gen HX35 - HX40. The exhaust wheel at its smallest point is L 55mm M 60mm R 65mm. The same goes for the exhaust housing exit ( just becose it has a larger exhaust flange dont make it flow any more) THe comp side is L 58mm M 56mm R 60mm. The exhaust housings are left HX35 12cm, top HX40 18cm, Right 3rd gen. The exhaust outlet is only a few mm diff between all of them.
Excellent comparison between the turbos. Is the 3rd gen turbo you have apart in the picture from an 03-04 truck since your showing a 58mm compressor?
As for reclocking the 04.5-07 turbo it is possible by going to a different wastegate arrangement. What comes to mind is the type of wastegate that Nathan Wright puts on his twins that use the stock turbo. The stock wastegate is eliminated and the turbo is reclocked. His wastegate consists of a simple screw and spring arrangement. I wouldn't think it is the greatest device but apparently it works very very well on his twins setup!
There is a similar wastegate actuator for GM 6.5 diesels called Turbomaster.

It's off an early 04. I have seen that wg spring set up and I dont see why it wouldnt work on any 03-07. It just uses drive pressure to blow the wg open insted of boost. Good find. I have seen several diff set ups on a few diff rigs so I know I dont know every diff thing about them this is just what I have found for myself. hope it helps
