A properly sized waste gate on a 9cm would still flow well? hence the uprated Hp of the CR's?

Jim
I have yet to see the wastegate arrangement of the stock housing. I am curious as to it's size.

With my modified HX35 hybrid and modded wastegate (enlarged) in a 14cm housing, I still couldn't bypass enough exhaust.

Is the 3rd gen wastegate large?

Dave

Dunno....

I think it might be this sale. Supports 325 Hp OEM?

E-bay

The HE351 ('04.5+) are great stock Holsets - they take a ton of abuse.

The tight turbine has it's limitations (especially if you're looking for 600HP) - but it spools pretty quick.

The compressor is relatively large, and consequently flows more than you'd think - even when the PR gets out of hand.

It has a conventional wastegate actuator whose action is modulated by the ECM-controlled wastegate solenoid's duty cycle... makes for some interesting tuning possibilties!

the manifold bolt holes from 2nd to 3rd gen are the same the only difference is placement in the engine compartment of the turbo. 3rd gen is lower and rearward towards the frame, 2nd gen is middle motor above the shock tower. i just put a htt from a 2nd on my third with no modifications to the turbine side. i have my stock 03 turbo (read manual wastegate not electric) and downpipe if someone wants to buy it. The exhaust adapters are the same on the turbine side of the piece so you can put a 04.5 elbow and run a full 4" downpipe on an 03 turbo. the 03 turbo normally comes with a 3.5" downpipe.

I installed a 3rd gen turbo from an '06 on my '93. Cut the pins off of the center section and rotated the exhaust and compressor housings together. Just had to use a different intercooler pipe aka some irrigation piping that was laying in the shed. I'll try to get some pictures posted. IT WAS WORTH THE SWAP. My roomate ended up putting one on his '90 also.

Well guys, i finally bought a cheap third gen turbo. It is going to be some work to make it fit, but I think the fast spool and bigger lungs will be worth it.

The compressor is 60mm not 62 like some claim.
The exhaust turbine is also 60 mm on the small end.
I believe the wastegate is quite similar in size to the HX35. It has a 7/8" hole or 22.23mm and 1 1/4" puck or 31.75mm.

If a guy were to open up the wastegate passage 1/8" bigger to 1"total you would gain 25% more flow.

The only challenge with this turbo swap is that due to the wastegate actuator being attached to the compressor housing, it is not possible to clock the compressor outlet to the general vicinity of the stock pipes. As it sits, the compressor outlet is at 12 o clock when bolted up.

Which Holset did you get?

The HE351W ('04.5+) has a larger compressor than the HE341W ('03-'04)

I will be mounting one of these as soon as parts get back from balancing. The other problems with the installation is the down pipe and the turbo oil drain. I think both will have to be fabbed up as the turbo direct down pipe that matches these turbo's are made with the turbo in a different spot under the hood. The stock oil drain won't work either as the turbo is at a different angle in a 2nd gen. I hope this does'nt turn out to be a flop but I can't see how with a 68mm compressor wheel and a smaller turbine wheel it won't flow more air.

XLR8R, I picked up a 351w off an 06'.

WVAussie, if you remove the two small pins between the exhaust housing, center section and compressor housing, you can reclock the center section to which ever direction/orientation that you want. These pins can be pulled out with a pair of pliers. You mentioned balancing, did you find a shop that can get parts for these? My turbo is a little questionable as far as the compressor oil seal, I'm gonna rig up a pressured oil test in the next day or two to see if the seals are good. The bearing are tight and wheels look great. Just that the compressor housing had some oil inside that definitely was engine oil and not filter oil. Anyway, if you find a shop that sells oil seals for these turbos, let me know.

Also, I'm on a tight wife monitored budget and so far i'm into this project 250 bucks. 500 is my limit and if I cant round up a local friend with a welder, I might have to buy a cheap 115v Harbor Freight special for 120 bucks.

I got a rebuild kit from this Guy. Ron's Turbo Service 801-842-9186. He was a little higher than some but he will balance it for free then. He's in Utah. I got a new compressor wheel from these people http://www.turbosupply.net/holsetpieceparts.html
