300 hp from a 94 160 hp 12v?

That is the question. I would like to get about 300 usable horsepower for towing and hauling. Mainly we use the truck for hauling our 3000lb slide - in camper and towing a 4000lb Jeep.

Here is what I have: 1. 94 12v with the 160 hp pump with TST
#6 plate
2. 5 speed tranny with SBC 350 hp clutch
3. 4.10 gears
4. 3" mandrel bent straight pipe exhaust
5. Biggest open element air filter I could fit
under the hood.
6. full set of gauges

We do alot of travelling in mountainous terrain in the Western US so I'm looking for great hill climbing power with reasonable egt's.

So what would it take to get 300 hp out of a 94 12v with the small pump for towing and hauling?

Any guidance is appreciated. Thanks, Randy

I called Piers about this, and Harry set me up with a #10 plate and 3K governor springs. Since you already have aplate, I would call up Piers and ask how it would work with your 6 plate. They are very nice people up there. He said with my 94 and the plate and springs I should be up around 230 HP in the stock position, with the plate slid forward could be up around 250. I asked him about injectors and he said it would be best to wait with them since I tow also until I can get a bigger exhaust and or a modified turbo.

With only adding about 7K lbs, IMO you would be all right EGT wise with 215's. I'd give Piers a call, though.

With your setup as listed but with a #10 plate you should get 300 hp and about 800 T/Q.

Thank you very much both of you. I think I'll go with the #10 plate and a 3k gsk. A few hundred more rpm's would really be nice.

Thanks again, Randy

why would you get rid of a #6 FOR A #10. the #6 puts out 100hp more than the #10.

Halerazor,

Good question. It seems that the #10 plate is pretty popular for making good power.

Are there different #10's or is there just one? I dont know. I'll do as crimedog suggested and call Piers.

Thanks, Randy

Halerazor and Randy,

Their is only one true #10 plate. The reason most people think it is the best is that it works the best with a 3gsk and for towing. As far as the charted horsepower (#6 being 100 more h.p.), well, that is just the chart and only implies having the plate in the stock position. Sliding a #10 forward anough will supply just as much power as a #6 with fewer egt issues. Do some searching and youll see it a lot here, Jim Fulmer has a dyno sheet of a 94 with 300 horse with a #10 and a 3gsk - he realy knows his stuff. just my .002

SHARPMACHINE, thanks. That is pretty much what Piers told me today when I called them. They were very helpful with my questions so I went ahead and ordered the 3k gsk and #10 plate. Plus they're going to take my #6 in trade. It'll be fun to play around with this new setup.

Thanks everyone, Randy

I can't wait till my plate and GSK get here on Thursday. I hear that it is night and day difference. My brother was talking all weekend about a Durasmooze he rode in. I'll show him on Thursday...

the plates make it seem like a whole new truck. i had a #6 in my 95 once the tranny stopped slipping and locked in O/D i could hit 100mph(120mph with 36in tires)no time. i heard the gsk's make a huge difference too can't wait to get one.

I think if you do a search on dynos you may find a copy of Jim's little pump tune - up I have seen it before and it makes me grin alot! As far as plates my #10 really woke my truck up but, the gsk is doing me no good riding around in my glove box! - gotta get it in the pump! One thing making me nervous is that I want to upgrade my tranny before I smoke it- its just hard to decide wich route to take. Their are many routs that are great, but it is real hard to let go of the cash..

Trucks like this one are a joy to work on, especially 96-98 5 Speeds(215 pump)....even more so than mine!

I wonder what a person would say if you said, do you want to drive it, race it or blow the turbo up
