Re:2003 New Injectors !!!!!

I was just down in Ogden talking to DD. very nice guy, informative, and all of that. Got to see the '03 injector and heard about how hard they are to get. Lucky duck, though, he gets to play and break things without paying

One thing they're working on is to change out the tips -- so you buy just that and keep the rest of the smarts. But that's bound to be labor intensive and the cost will be really high no matter what. definately a superior design (the 03 common rail system), but really, you can't beat the 2nd gen 24v'ers for low cost bombing because you don't have to touch the smart/expensive piece (the VP44). $600 for a set of DDII's, $600 for a fueling box, a scotty II, and you've got what, 375 RWHP or thereabouts? And if you are properly transmissioned ;D you can get quite a bit out of the HX35 and stock exhaust. yea, I know, watch EGTs and get a con FE...

Re:2003 New Injectors !!!!!

I think we can expect the cost to drop, certainly, but really a set of six smart injectors is bound to be expensive. right now their at $800 EACH, which is not far above the DD cost ;D, according to what I learned last week. Today, there is a serious availabilty problem from Bosch, and I understand that down-truck status being required to get any.

Today, DD's highest volume injector (about 70%) is the stage 2's. considering the simplicity of the injector itself (compare with the V8 PSD even...) and the high volume, there's no way that the new 03 injectors will touch $100 a pop. IMHO anyway.

But yea, I expect the greatest improvement per dollar will be in the fueling boxes. You have far more control over timing and delivery, and I'd expect electronic controls to have a greater HP gain than they do on the 2nd gens without injectors.

It will be interesting to see what the upper limit will be. But just think -- an Edge comp type of box that has no pump wire to pierce and no VP44 to break. Maybe we can expect HP improvements at least as high as comp level 5/5 with stock injectors on a ETC. Beyond that it will take injectors, proably, to get into the 350+ HP range. I'm just guessing and rambling though. Makes me like my 02 and HX35 -- injectors plus a box and you're chasing 350 RWHP for $1200.

BTW, the new 03 six speeds come with an HY. I saw one down at DD. So in addition to the expensive injectors, you've gotta upgrade the turbo in order to support higher HP numbers. it doesn't look good for low-cost HP upgrades for the '03

Re:2003 New Injectors !!!!!

Lawrence has worked very hard on this truck already. His injectors are very very good and they will be the absolute best thing a guy could get for his truck. The 03 inectors more complex and tougher to deal with than our 12 and 24 offerings ever were.

Don~

If they truely are $800 each then its pretty steep, I was reading it as $800 for the set w/exchange, perhaps I was mistaken. I'm sure they wish to recover some R&D which I know a lil bit about working with Don on his 24v injectors. Whats there to cheer about? They make horsepower they claim to, end of story. How bout you price a set of brand new stock injectors?

Re:2003 New Injectors !!!!!

They won't be making much even if they sold them outright for $800 each. New injectors are about $5k a set, and they're hard to get. No one is going to pay $4800 for a set of injectors either. I'm sure it's $800 with a core exchange... not a bad deal. They don't have to make a huge profit per injector... DD and Bullydog sell hundreds of sets.

Hey Don (or anyone else for that matter),

Have you seen or drove a truck with the DD injectors in it? I'm curious what we're seeing for smoke, drivability, idle, and so on. With the extra power, are we seeing that freaky governor suddenly pour power to the rear wheels?

Inquiring minds wanna know ;D

Rod

Re:2003 New Injectors !!!!!

yo calm down guys ;D. At $800 each DD is not recovering much of their R&D costs. In fact, at that price they're practically giving away their value add. This isn't a DD=high price thing, this is DD doing what they do best -- producing a high HP injector for as little as practical.

The extrude honer process is expensive. not just the equipment but the knowledge and manufacturing process control to produce repeatable results. Right now you're getting the first pieces from their model shop, not their production shop.

So you can expect the price to go down for two reasons: first, demand will increase for stock injectors, so the market price should drop. second, you'll see the DD internal costs come down when they transfer the process from the model shop to production. Both of these may take some time because (it seems to me) demand for 03 modified injectors will not be high, initially, simply because there aren't very many trucks out there yet. And do you think that the majority of the market will rush out and tinker with a design that is brand new? I don't. I think it will take some time to prove the maturity of the design before the bulk of the market will roll the dice against the warranty.

In that respect, the demand for 2nd gen stage 2's, if you permit a little market speculation here, is probably still at its peak and will probably remain there at least until the late 02's get 200,000 miles on them. So if you look at the whole market dyamic, DD is on the very hairy leading bleading edge with nothing but improvements in cost and quality yet to come.

just my $.025, and I still like my 02. I don't want 4 doors, a shorter bed, the higher cost to bomb, and the uncertainty of a new design.
