Guys this thing has gone way beyond sensible discussion and comments in good taste.

I am all for the tossing about of the different theory's, that is precisely how we all learn, but lets not let this drop any further into the sewer than it already has.

If it keeps heading this direction the lock will have to come out.

Re:2-3 Bindup shift

It does not take a transmission technician with 20 years experience to know that if your transmission shifted from 2nd to 1st at 20 miles per hour or faster one of two things have to happen. Either you are going to feel it and notice an RPM increase (flair up) or something has to slip. A downshift to first gear could cause the symptoms listed in the bind up scenario namely causing the rear tires to slide.
I want to offer another approach to solving this difference in points of view. There is one bit of information given to us that has not yet been discussed. Stefan stated

QUOTE
“On the way back to the shop when the transmission went to make the shift into 3rd gear Bill made the rear end of the truck lockup. He also created a 40 psi pressure drop.”

I would like to see some of the transmission builders comment on the 40psi drop. As I understand it the pressure in the governor circuit is what controls the shift points. Could a 40psi drop while in second gear cause a downshift to first? I think some answers about shift points and pressure could shed some light on the issue.
I am not attempting to put gas on a fire here so please lets keep this on topic and civil.
Re:2-3 Bindup shift

Ed on a dyno witch in the car or dyno makes no difference it takes 59 percent duty cycle on gov solenoid to get a 1-2 so we would need to know what the accual preesure was regardless of the 40 psi drop . this curcuit has line in a some points glad to see the the approach you have taken to clear this up.

later ghostech

Re:2-3 Bindup shift

Edward, The trans downshifting from 3 -2 is not the same as from 2-1 !! Shifting down 2-1 the sprag will ratchet unless the rear band is applied and it only happens in manual low.
I'm not a technician but have them apart and understand how they work.
As far as the engine flair, it depends on the load/ throttle position.
To answer your question or statement, yes the sprag slips (ratchets ).

j fox the engine rev is because the trans let go off one of the planets and went to a different gear ratio low enogh that the motor has to catch up with so it feelsa like nuteral but is just a lower gear
