2-3 Bindup shift
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
Not to belabor the point (yea, right), but Bill's contention that the transmissions shifts 1-2-1-3 is only valid IF the kickdown band completely releases the drum before the clutch can take hold (flareup). If there is ANY overlap period the trans isn't technically in 1st gear.

In order to obtain a specific gear ratio from a planetary gear set, some components must be held stationary while others are free to turn. In the case of 2nd gear, the front clutch drum must be held stationary; in fact, the only difference between 1st gear (2.45-1 ratio) and 2nd gear (1.45-1 ratio) is that the drum is stopped and held firm by the kickdown band. Therefore if the band is released, the trans reverts to 1st gear as would be the case in a mistimed 2-3 upshift.

But, if the drum were allowed to turn at less than full speed, as would be the case when the band is releasing, the theoretic gear ratio is somewhere between 1st and 2nd. This theoretic variable gear ratio is what makes a smooth transition from one gear to another possible.
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
I gotta ask.....
Really what is the point of this anyway? Seems to me that you guys are taking the verbal bashing from DTT's forum and bringing it here, in a lesser tone. Pretty lame if you ask me :

I have always thought the reason we have these forums is so that we can learn. In the learning process there are often different points of view. Without discussion all we would ever have is two points of view and no one would be able to tell which view was better. I for one do not find this discussion lame at all and I am thankful that this forum is available for those of us who wish to hash out two opposing points of view. I also appreciate that for the most part the discussion has been polite and free from insults implied or direct. Thanks DTR for making this available.

Re:2-3 Bindup shift
have to agree with stakeman who ever said that the re shifs 1-2 1-3 was right only if you have a cutloose not a bind. ccan never get to the low rooler if there is not run up in rpm
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
Of course you do Edward- I have read your posts on the DTT thread as well. I'm not trying to personally "attack" you. But seems like most of this thread is less than informative to me. And yes, I know this is America and I can quit reading it if I don't like it....................
Jack is doing a good job on this site. All I am trying to get across is that to me it looks like the Ats guys trying to beat up on DTT . Same ol same ol..........
If I am wrong and missing something- well, sorry
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
Spark Chaser,

If you think its ATS bringing it here you better look at who starts these threads.

It starts on thier site. Then before long it is posted by one of thier customers on all the truck forums. Maybe its their way of advertising or I prefer to call it propaganda.
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
Point well taken Stake ;D
Fact is- Bill said he could lock up the rear end in his kids truck with a bind up, right?
Apparently he is the only one who has done this or even seen a binding Shift, correct?
So, my take on this being "informative" is- Yes it's information, but seems that the reality of it is everyone is speculating. So, instead of making negative comments about things nobody else has seen, why not wait till the bet is settled then if you guys are right- rock on 8)
Re:2-3 Bindup shift
Spark Chaser,

That sounds like a good idea. The problem is that this all started over the emjay controller. Which is a product I have been using for a while now. If I use and like a product I will stand up for it when someone tries to bash it.

This all started because DTT did not receive a free controller.
