12 valve mechanical lift pump install?

So I am planning a Helix 2 cam so I can run a 12 valve lift pump. (or some cam with the lobe for a 12 V pump, are there any other 24 valve cams with that lobe?)

To those who have this set up for the lift pump, what all do I need and how does it hook up in the fuel lines? I need the fittings and what not to go into and from the pump, how the regulator hooks in and which one to use, etc.

I currently still have the original LP on the block, yes you read that right. I want to do this LP thing right the first time and not spend hundreds of dollars on the myriad of other options that all end up not giving me a cam.

I searched for how people have done this and found nothing. It should be simple but I could still use some help or pics.

thanks

I run a 12v lift pump on my 24v motor. You need the lift pump, the spacer between the pump and block, a fiter before the pump , and one after.

Why not run a RASP or MITUSA pump? Those things look like a great alternative.

I had TRE Diesel in VA Beach do mine while he was installing the H2 cam. Great mod for peace of mind. I could take the fuel pressure gauge off if I wanted to. Do it and forget about it. Not to mention the added benefits of the H2 cam with lower egt's and added performance.

Most people don't run regulators. I already had 1/2 lines so my fp was 50 at cruise so I went with a simflo regulator from vulcan performance and it gives me rock solid fp: 18-22 always. I got my pump and helix 2 cam installed by TRE like Tiger Rag.

MITUSA isn't a bad option either. TRE is a dealer for those also.

is there a big difference in these mechanical lift pumps i seen one called the fuel boss also. and around how much would your everyday mechanic charge for that job. and i assume that this will take care of your lift pump failure problems?.

As I said in my first post, a FASS does not get me a cam, and a full FASS is in the price range of a cam and 12 V pump. A FASS hangs down below my framerail, is sometimes loud, is still electrical, etc.

Anyone else have any tips on the install? I will probably buy the cam from a dealer who does the 12 valve lift pump conversions and pick his brain about what I need when the time comes.

PM Fishin2Deep4U. He works at Diesel Dist USA and I believe he did the mod you're talking about.

Well put, and FASS's still fail. They are much better than stock, but with the cam driven pump you can forget about fuel supply at that point. I haven't thought about fuel supply since I put mine on. It should be good for 300-350k miles. Cam and pump are in the same price range. It's just the install that is a little more involved.

Mech fuel pumps still have a service life to them and will need to be replaced. The one on my 12v is in that category. I like the FASS for when it comes to filter changes and when you need to open the fuel system up, much easier to bleed. Bump the starter instead of pushing that primer button a couple dozen times.

Yes, they have a service life, like I said of 300-350k miles. That is probably 3 to 4 times what you will get out of any electric fuel pump. Don M also massages the cam lobe for a more ideal output from the mechanical pump.

I'm not trying to badmouth the electic pumps, they have a place. The mechanical option is more involved install but the longevity and reliability are the major benefits. As menitoned before, you also get the added benefit of additional peformance and EGT control of the cam. Once it is on there, you can basically forget about it.
