You have to read this! Operator ERROR!

I work for the municapality of Anchorage as a heavy equipment Mech. This is a true, no b.s. story of a rig I am working on.

I have just recently pulled a " Cummins 5.9 ISM" engine out of a water truck to find out where this " copper, babbet" material is coming from. This Operator of the vehicle was driving down the road when the "RED STOP ENGINE LIGHT" came on, "NO OIL PRESSURE", he was unclear what this meant ??? :. The traffic light turned red so he stopped ( leaving the eng. running :) he then calls back to dispatch to ask, " what does this red light on the dash mean"? Dispatch tells him, don't know? So he wait's till the light turn's green and drives to the other side of the intersection, pulls over and shut's the truck down. Elapsed time about 3-4 min's. He calls the "ET'S" ( extra technition's, we call these lovely people something else ;D). They come out, look around and find that the OIL DRAIN PLUG is gone! So they throw another drain plug in the pan, fill it with oil and try to start it! ..Dosen't start, so they wait for a bit, the eng cools and finally restart's. The "ET'S" tell him take her to the shop and get it checked out. Truck show's up ( sounding really bad ) and we hook the lap top up to it and start pulling all the data ( this is where the operator is gonna get bit!) We find out the actual time the eng runs with no oil and the amount of times they tried to restart it. Our boss say's " sounds fine, let it go back out" ??? We tell him, "YOUR NUT'S!" (Long block cummins 5.9 ISM priced out at $27,500.00!) So we pull the eng and I got it torn down today. What I found was the Cam bearing's gone, the main and rod bearings are ok, but the Idler gear for the crank and cam was cracked all the way through! If that would of let go, you could of kissed away the cam gear, crank gear, valves, the list goes on. The material I found in the oil filter was the idler gear bushing ( copper, babbet material ). Anywho the operator is more than likly going to get fired for being "STUPID". And the service guy who did not tighten the drain plug will get away scott free! ( He did not put his anitials on the service card ).

Long story short, I get to rebuild my first Cummins!

This Operator of the vehicle was driving down the road when the "RED STOP ENGINE LIGHT" came on, "NO OIL PRESSURE", he was unclear what this meant . The traffic light turned red so he stopped ( leaving the eng. running ) he then calls back to dispatch to ask, " what does this red light on the dash mean"? Dispatch tells him, don't know? So he wait's till the light turn's green and drives to the other side of the intersection, pulls over and shut's the truck down.

So, aside from not knowing much about the engine, what exactly did he do wrong? The light came on and he called it in...then pulled over and killed the engine at the first safe chance he got. Sounds like whoever didn't put the drain plug back in should be the one to go....not the driver (who really didn't do anything wrong from what you said above). Did I miss something?? ???

Yup - spoken like a true Ford driver. :P

If you are too stupid to understand what the light means (or how the equipment works) you probably don't need to be driving - or you need to be driving a Ford.

Getting any sleep these days Shane?

What's that??

I'll agree that if you're going to be operating equipment then you need to AT LEAST know what the warning lights mean...if not more than that. However, I still don't see what else the operator could have done. The light came on...he called in...he pulled over and killed the engine as soon as he could safely do so. What more could he have done?

Yep, we used to have a saying in the highway dept. years ago - "to operate the equipment you must first be at least as intelligent as the equipment".

Trying to...but not doing a very good job. :

Do Fords come with Idiot lights are do they consider that redundant ???
Don't know...I've got a gasser. However, I am living proof that an '81 Chevy with a 305 in it can run approximately 5 miles through a field and down a road with no oil in it. After that it ain't worth much...but the 400 small block I replaced it with sure was!! ;D

Stupid tee post... >

Ahhhh....the yesteryears of high school.... ;D

Gonz....are you a Ditto head??

Yes. Fords do come with idiot lights. And yes. The drivers are idiots. My friends check engine light has been on for 3 months now and he still hasn't gotten it checked. He just put a piece of electrical tape over it to block it out.

You know what the idot light is on a ford right. Its the light from a shop light held by the owner of the truck as he works on it everynight.
I heard that somewhere
