yellowstone in october

whats it like? we are going to WY for 9 days starting october 3rd. we are driving from iowa, going to rushmore, then on to yellowstone. anyone have experience in yellowstone in october? we are planning on camping at the slough creek campground for two nights (I hear the fly fishing is amazing there). we know its going to be cold, but thats fine, we are from alaska. my wifes birthday is next week, so I am thinking of getting her a gift ON her birthday, but then in yellowstone, suprising her with a night in a lodge (instead of a tent for a change) anyone have advice on which lodge to go to for a night?

from yellowstone to the grand tetons...any ideas for that park?

lastly, jackson hole where apparently they sell my favorite beer (alaskan amber), so I will be buying as many cases as will fit in my truck.

so if anyone has any ideas on the above trip, please let me know, or some extra places to stop. like I said, we are leaving the 3rd of october, and back by 12th.

thanks!

It'll be the start of rutting season, so elk, deer, bison will be out and about.

Latest I have been in that area was July. cool mornings, nice days, a bit dry.
I went in April, still snow on the ground, some roads were closed. I think fall would be a better time to get around.
be prepared for body damage with the animals in the rut.

I just went in the first week of June of this year, umm bring lots of warm clothes, one of the roads was still closed and the pass between Yellowstone and the Tetons had 5-6 feet of snow (it was snowing as we where driving the pass) on the Mts while driving into the Tetons from Yellowstone. Saw lots of wild life got pic's of two diff blk bears and some shots of a grey wolf. There's only two lodges in Yellowstone as far as I know, you might want to check there listings could be crowded from what some of the rangers where sayin. Have fun be safe and stay away from the Bison....

My SIL and her husband hit it after Labor day when they had picked up a Denali (SP) in Oregon. Said it was dead and they were able to get a hotel without a reservation.

Yellowstone in October....
In my opinion, Sep. and Oct. are the best time of year to tour Yellowstone and Grand Teton parks due to it is beatiful and there are not very many people around compared to the summer months. Most of the stuff shuts down shortly after Labor Day though, so call ahead if you have somewhere in mind where you want to stay. A night in a really nice lodge? Try the lodge at Jenny Lake in Teton park. Very nice, with plenty of private space and views, but a little pricey. (The rivers around the lodge have excellent fly fishing) There are private cabins at Colter Bay Villiage also in Teton Park, They are more of a rustic, no frills deal, but still a nice place to stay.

Be sure to call ahead and make reservations as a lot of the attractions and activities shut down after Labor Day.

If you enjoy viewing Elk, take the drive from Moose (just outside of Jackson) and around the back side of Jackson Lake Dam in the late evening just before dark. The Elk come out of the timber into the open meadows and are viewable from the road most every night there. You should see some real nice bulls.

Have a ball.

Like some said before bring lots of warm stuff could snow especially in October. We had snow in June after we had a tornado all in the same day. The Aspens should start turning soon so it is going to be beautiful. Just be smart especially with the with the bison and elk.
