travel from denver to yellowstone np

only lived in colorado 2 years and trying to find the best route to yellowstone. mapquest says i-25 to i-80 torock springs, then north on 191 to jackson. on the atlas it seems more direct to take 287 from rawlins. thanks in advance.

287 is a little hilly compared to the interstate but not at all bad (kinda scenic too) I always use it when heading for west bound I-80

The I-80 to Rock Springs route has the least grade/mountain driving. Also, there is supposed to be some road construction west of Dubois on the Hwy. 26 route. The Rock Springs rte. is about 25 miles longer to YNP than the Rawlins-Lander-Dubois route. fwiw

I would go to casper and either go thru Dubois to the south gate or go to Cody and go to the east gate. Keep in mind the north entrance is closed over by Red Lodge from a rock slide.

if your looking to get there in a fast amount of time then do the map quest route. made up my own route from grand forks north dakota to reno nevada and took the map quest way back and it was 5-6 hours faster. but if you drive up through the center of wyoming, i think it's a really pretty drive. but if your not worried about time take what ever route looks best to you. i have always found that to be the best when i'm going somewhere.

The last time I went that direction we went HWY 14 from Ranchester to Cody. Not the fastest route but it is pretty scenic. If the road from Red Lodge was open I think that would be a more scenic drive, though I have never taken it. What is that? the Beartooth mountains? I have seen it on the travel channel but have never driven that direction.
