The Worst Motel Experience Ever

I reserved a non smoking room at Quality Inn & Suites in Columbus Ohio for 3 nights to attend the Mopar Nationals. Night one: we got off the elevator and there was a strong odor of smoke. The hallway was filled with smoke as we walked to our room. Got inside and called the front desk, they sent someone up and changed the a/c filter and sprayed an air freshener up and down the hallway. The next morning I asked to change my room because my son has asthma and this was a problem, but was told they were sold out. Night two: got back from the track to get a shower and go to dinner, again the hallway filled with smoke. The end of the hall looked like fog at 5am. Again I asked to change rooms, no luck. While out we checked with several other hotels but all were booked up. I stopped at Home Depot and bought the best air purifier I could find. ($169.) Went back to the hotel and showed them what I bought and went to our room. They said they did the best they could and gave me a can of air spray. I used the purifier and put wet towels on both sides of the door. As the night went on my son did a breathing treatment. Around 1am my son had an asthma attack and we had to go to the er. At this point we could not stay at this hotel and felt it was best to go home. As I was checking out I told my story to manager on duty. I told her a bought a non smoking room and did not get it therefore I should not have to pay for it. She said I would not be charged for the third night as I checked out early and she would waive the second night since I spent most of it in the e/r. (she even wanted a copy of discharge from hospital, like I would even dream up this story) but I had to pay for the first night. I said that was unacceptable, so she called the district manager who said I needed to pay for both nights. Wow customer service and empathy at a new level. I don’t have a problem with people that smoke in there smoking room, my beef is with the hotel. I will never stay at a Quality Inn or others connected with Choice Hotels group. Paid my $186 bill and left.

Since you have paid, you may now call Ohio State Health dept. and file a complaint.

if you are really ticked off, you have ten days to contact a lawyer for damages. (he has to file a Notice to Petition within 12 days)
tort law, because you son was subject to a life safety/dangerous condition. you used due dilligence in contact with that hotel and searched for another hotel.

the non suggested way: You Tube style of consumer complaint is to pull the fire alarm at the sign of smoke.......knowling full well you are on the smoking floor. The hotel has to re locate you to a safer area at their cost. you have to pretend you thought something was really on fire.

ahhhhhhhh, wal mart level legal services......

seriously, I hope your kid is okay. and you can cancel if on a credit card as you had requested a non smoking room but did not get it. let them fight with the hotel, they have more clout. you don't need another hassle...

All things that should be done but people generally never follow thru and DO them! That's why the hotels get away with things like this and they know it.

I bet he was NOT on a smoking floor and the hotel was just 'looking the other way' for a bunch of people, (paying customers), that were smokers. Smoking floor or not, if I walked into a hallway and saw a haze of smoke, the fire alarm would be pulled and I'd start the evacuation of rooms.

Most hotels that I've stayed in have provisions for smoke mitigation within designated rooms so that the smell doesn't escape the room in the first place. I wasn't aware they'd designate entire floors to smokers.

If you dont make some noise and get reimbursed they will just keep letting people violate the rules.
Next time somebody might have a fatal asthma attack.

PS: If I found out I was going to die in a month I would start smoking again--its that addictive.

How was there that much smoke in the hallway without setting off the hotel smoke alarms? A couple of weeks ago I was in a hotel and some guy couldn't be bothered to walk the 20ft from his room to go outside and smoke. After removing the smoke detector from the wall in his room when it set off the alarm, the alarm sounded again when he opened the door and let the smoke out into the hallway. I'm just glad all this excitement happened before I went to bed instead of waking me up in the middle of the night.

If you paid with Visa contact Visa, they would likely refund you as "services paid for but not received". You may have to sign a declaration but you should get your money back.

I can understand your dilemma as my wife also has severe asthma and it doesn't take much smoke to put her in severe respiratory distress.

I am going to suggest a different approach though than everyone else, I think you failed to do enough to protect your son.

You should have grabbed your belongings and moved, that means out of town if necessary to keep your loved one from getting ill. I realize it is a real pain to ruin a trip like that but I have no doubt as you think about this, you will agree that the Mopar Nationals be dammed your son is a hell of a lot more important!

I know it sucks, but as a father you have to do what you have to do to insure a healthy enviroment for your child....even if it means you have to drive home in the middle of the night.

Sorry if I come off as being negative here but my thoughts are for your Son's health and not whether I am hurting your feelings. The Motel was wrong, but you have to look at the bigger picture and avoid putting your son in danger like that even if it means tossing the years vacation out the window.

I hope your son gets better soon

Wow,

Sucks about your son feeling as terrible as he did.

My buddy (47 year old man and his wife) were on "tour", so to speak around the country doing his thing for the local lumber yards on his schedule. The both of them woke up covered in nasty bites all over their bodies. Bed bugs were the first thought, but the Dr's seemed to think it was some other type of parasite.

Long story short, he was severely allergic to whatever it was, and he wound up in the hospital for several days due to the reactions that occurred from being bitten all over during the night.

Talk about bad experiences.

Thank you ....... I'll sleep in my truck from now on...

If you seen smoke in the hallway I would have called the fire dept. Fire was the only thing it could have been since Ohio is a smoke free state.
