Words: Be careful what you say

Here are some examples of words not saying exactly what was intended. These were compiled in an article in our local paper a few years ago and I enjoyed them so much that I saved them. I hope you enjoy them as well.

A police chief of a Texas city stated: "The vice situation here is the best we have had in a long time."

Another source says "Our policemen are fully able to compete with all the criminals in town."

From a church "Our choir participated in a radio program in New Orleans. It was good to hear them and realize that they were over five hundred miles away."

"Watch out for the chili supper at the Methodist Church."

A newspaper reports "This is Miss ........'s first appearence in Dallas in twenty years and everyone should be happy."

A roofing company ad says "Leaks Guaranteed"

A department store ad for men's suits states "Won't last an hour"

Auto repair shop promises to do a "Bang-Up Job"

Auto service business offers a "Complete grease job, including floor mats and seat covers."

Another auto shop ad says "No matter how small your problem is, you can count on our mechanics to do a major job."

An auto dealer invites you to visit him and "see how little you need to own a new car."

A friendly loan company asks, "Why go elsewhere to be cheated? You can depend on us to do the job."

Here's one I saw myself last winter. An ad for a boat for sale stated " Won't last until spring."

Dan
