Won PayPal dispute and the guy sent me a Trojan Horse! What's my recourse?

So I bought some trim rings on e-bay. I got them and they were not the size the guy specified in his auction. I told him I wanted to send them back and he refused. He said he had posted pics and measurements and it was my fault for not paying attention. I filed a dispute with PayPal and HE escalated it to a claim immediately because he was so sure he was right. PayPal took one day to find in my favor. I was happy but he was not. He sent me an e-mail and asked me to check out this site about steel rims and trim rings and like an idiot I clicked on it. Of course, instantly I have all kinds of popups from anti-virus sites and then eventually **** pops up. I am 99.99% sure he sent it to me but is there somewhere I forward his e-mail with the attachment to so it can be checked for viruses? I have the guy's e-mail and his name and home address so I cannot believe he would be so dumb. Is there any other recourse I have here if it turns out he did, in fact, send me this virus?

I needed a new harddrive anyways so it's not the end of the world but I'm definitely going to try and have him booted off of PayPal and E-Bay if I can at a minimum...

I believe if you have a yahoo email acct it should do a virus scan on new emails. Run your virus software and see if it cleans things up for you....if not I'm sure someone will chime in on a freeware virus scan you can do.

I'd like to find a site where I could send this link and let them open it up and scan it for viruses. My home computer is pretty much done right now. I'm not even going to consider testing my work computer......

send e-bay the link he sent you with a note, letting them know. who it came from. and what happened when it was opened. be sure to put the warning in bold so they won't open it on a unsecured server.
i think they will handle everything from that point on. e-bay takes customer complaints very seriously.

also to get rid of some viruses, the hard drive must be partitioned and formated. i aquired one virus a few years ago that killed a hard drive. it wasn't recoverable.
good luck

My brother has saved my computers several times over the years when they has worse issues than this. He can probably do it again but if not then it's time for a new one anyways......

Thanks for the advise. I just want to be 100% sure that's where the virus came from before I go trying to get him banned.....

I would also clear the bios on your computer before installing a new hard drive. Besides reporting him to ebay for what he did. People buying on ebay will need to know not to do business with this dirtbag.

Dirtball!!! I was in the right too. I don't know why he would get mad at me when he mis-represented his product.....

Not sure if you are interested in really taking this guy down, but if you are that is a MAJOR FCC violation. You should report him to the FBI. They will investigate the virus, and look to see if it in fact came from him. It is possible that hew did not know it was there, but it is strange that the virus sreeners on the mail server didn't pick it up. This tells me it is not widespread and just something this guy does to make things 'right' in his eyes.

If it were me, I would burn him to the ground, he shot first after all.

You can forward the email to Norton or really just about any of the major Anti-Virus sites and they can tell you if it was the cause of your troubles.

Well, my brother has pretty much the best anti-virus software out there as he does computer repairs part time. When I went to forward the e-mail to him my computer here at work scanned it and it said there was a Trojan Horse. When he got it and scanned it he said there was no virus attached to it. He said there may have been a virus already there just waiting for a portal to enter and this particular link provided that portal or back door. I don't know. I really don't know anything about computers.
I'm not sure how to handle this now though. If he told me it was there then I would definitely go after the guy but if there's a doubt in my mind I won't drag him through the mud only to find that he did nothing wrong.....

Contact the FBI. They will investigate, if it was accidental, no harm no foul. If there was, you can also get him for property crime.

Scorched earth time. You may be his latest victim. Others may not be able or willing to do anything. You should at least have the 'situation' investigated.
