Wireless Router Problem

Before my garage PC crashed, I was connecting using a Linksys wireless router and a D-Link USB wireless adapter.

I have replaced the HD, reloaded MS Home Edition SP2. Now, it shows my wireless network is available, but it keeps searching for the network address and will not connect. Any ideas..........?

I was hoping to get around doing this. The PC is in the garage and I don't have enough ethernet cable to reach that far. It may be my only alternative.

Well, If you have a computer in the house, you can use it to go to the router config - or just take the router out to the garage and plug in out there. Is there security enabled on the router - if so, it may have an issue with the new software on the computer in the garage, The computer may no longer be set up to access the router.... also, have you tried the simple things like unplugging the router to let it reset itself? Unplug your modem, then unplug router.. and shut down computer... leave off for a couple minutes, then plug back in modem first and let it boot up, then plug in router and let it boot up, then turn on computer.... Sometimes you need to reboot them in the order which the signal comes in - ie. modem, router, computer...

I have unplugged the cable modem and router several times, but try it again.

winkle, the router is connected to the cable modem in the house. The house PC has a PCI card and the garage pc has the usb adapter.

I suppose you have a valid WEP key since it's letting you get to the point of trying to connect. Do you have a MAC filter on your network? I wouldn't expect this to be an issue since you're using the same wireless card as before, but it's something to check.

Don't count on much help from Linksys...their tech support line is horrible. I spent a few hours with them the other night and was no further than when I started.

I don't know if Linksys works the same as D-link router but on the D-link you can type in the IP address on the internet (ie..http//000.000.0.0)and bring up all your information and even make change to like security and so forth.

I had forgot about that. Now all I have to do is remember has to get the IP address.

Go on the computer with the router attached to it go to the control panel click on network connection, double click on the connection and in the lower left hand corner you'll see a box that say details, that where it will list your IP address.

Sorry I took so long, but I finally got it up today. I ended up going with a Linksys USB. After reloading XP SP2, fixing some missing driver problems and over an hour with Linksys support, it's finally running.
