Wire size question

What size wire do I need to carry the 60 amps my generator is putting, I would like to to be able to find a plug too.

Can we get a little more info on your generator please?

Off hand I'd say you need at least 4 guage.

You also need to know distance, type of conductor wanted, SO type wire or will it be in a conduit?

Most likely you should be able to find the plug at NAPA. They recommend changing the output pig tail when you change altenators.

Boatnik, I think he is refering to an A/C power generator.

Yea its an AC generator, 15KW, 60 amps. I was thinking thhn, this will only be temporary when the power goes out, eventually it will be hardwired in, just dont have the money for that yet.

15kW ? is it a 3 phase set or a regular 120/240 volt set?

How do you plan on tying into your house wiring? The best, easiest, and safest way is to use a transfer switch. This will require 4 wires of at least 4 AWG or bigger. Two for the hots, one for neutral, and one for ground.

I aslo reccomend looking up the electric code in your area and see what it requires for stuff like this. How far do you need to run the cable?

THHN should be good if you use copper and not aluminum. It has a 194 degree max operating temp. in dry and wet locations. The insulation is a heat resistant thermoplastic so it is also flame retardant.
