Windows XP Service Pack 2?

Anyone out there download it yet?
Just a heads up, doing it now and boy there is a lot of crap you have to check.
First you need to check your computer manufacturers website to find out if they have any updates that need to be done. For my HP, they reccommend a bunch of driver updates BEFORE you install Service Pack 2. My ISP (SBC/Yahoo DSL) has also released a software patch to install after the upgrade. Many software programs might have issues running correctly after installing Service Pack 2 so you need to check with the software vendor's website to see it they have a patch that needs to be installed.

Installed it on one of my systems and haven't had any problems yet, but you are correct: there is a fair amount of homework to do before installing if you don't want any nightmares!

I have chosen not to take it yet.
I did a lot of reading on it and it has a lot of issues with applications for communications (such as remote desktop, telnet sessions, etc).
Microsoft has a list of known applications that fail with SP2 and many of them I use frequently.
I think I'll hold of a while while they get more hot fixes for it.

If you keep your computer updated with the releases from Microsoft for SP1 I wouldn't update the computer to SP2 at the moment.

I burned the 272MB service pack to a CD and have updated three machines without incident. Going on two weeks now. Computers run 24/7.

I haven't noticed any changes in operation, startup, stability, etc..... Wait, the icons changed thier order in my links bar in Internet Explorer. No biggie.

It wasn't anything like SP1.

I never install any service pack for a few months after it comes out... Guess it's too much time spent in the corporate environment.

If you want to do it and dont want to tie up your line doing the download or want a copy for a back up Microsoft will send you a CD free not even a shipping charge.

I just did both mine in the last two days. My home computer is a bit slower on start up, but other than that it seems fine. No problems at all with the one at work. If you use dial up be warned it takes for ever.

I am reading a lot of horror stories on this update, you may or may not have problems depending on your specific situation.

My advice is to wait a while if you can, give them a little time to identify and work out the bugs

Uh-oh, I just installed it today but didn't check the Gateway site for any pre-install procedures.

Big download. 90+MB.

So far so good though, knock on wood...

I downloaded and installed it a couple of days ago. It has a different firewall feature and includes a pop up blocker for IE. So far no problems.

I think it was PC world that said there's some sort of issue on about 15% of installs.

Most of the folks that seem to be having problems have systems full of spyware and loads of other KRUD... And they were probably having OS issues all along and may not even know it.
