Most likely you minimized it. Here's what you need to do. I'm assuming your taskbar was on the bottom of the screen.

1. Drag your mouse cursor to the very bottom of the screen
2. It should change from an arrow cursor to one that has two arrows pointing up and down.
3. Click you left mouse button and hold it down
4. Move the mouse cursor up about and inch, and your task bar should pop back up.

Got this off my XP help. It is how to HIDE the taskbar. Hopefully, you can work backwards and redisplay yours.

To hide the taskbar
Right-click the Start button, and then click Properties.
On the Taskbar tab, select the Auto-hide the taskbar check box.
Notes

To redisplay the taskbar, point to the area of your screen where the taskbar is located.
You can temporarily hide the taskbar by dragging the top edge down. To redisplay the taskbar, drag the visible edge upward.

Once you figure out how to unhide it, you could adjust the screen display and stretch it out get rid of that half inch of black surrounding it.

Sometimes there's a line accross the bottom of the screen. Drag it up to pull up the bar. Only works if it's unlocked though. Once you get it back you can right click on it and see some options. You can drag the task bar around the screen... to the side, or up top, make it one icon or two icons thick...

Go to your "my computer" folder on your desktop, then click on control panel, then click on "start menu and task bar, then you can play around with check boxes regarding your task bar. This should fix you up.
