Great Pics! I kind of like the look of them also. But they are still a novelty.
Not sure I want to see them everywhere, but since they need steady wind supply, guess that means middle of nowhere or in the mountains.... so no problem?

RJ
the GE 1.5 MW ESS turbine at my school is 262 feet to the top of the nacelle and the blade length is 121 feet. with a circumfrence wind swept area of 252 feet.
ideal wind speed, 14 m/s (about 30 mph) , wind is alot different a couple hundred feet up.
will generate with wind speeds as low as 3.5 m/s (8 mph)

and they are GROWING AND GROWING.

GE manufactures tower sections in Fort Worth TEXAS, i miss that place. . . .
but the parts do come from all across the country and some parts from over seas.

EDIT : the above post meant to say, HUB DIAMETER of 252 feet, NOT circumfrence.

Max,
Just curious.... what's the man hrs required per week, month, or yr to keep one of those monsters up and running?
No talking emergency repairs or parts breakage..... just routine preventative maintenance.

to be honest i do not know the actual hour numbers, oil changes (87 gallons) for our turbine happens every 5 years, IF our six month oil analysis shows that it does not need to be changed or changed sooner or if the climate is rougher. .

i believe we do regular routine maintenance every six month, checking lube, feeding the auto lubers, checking a WHOLE check list (pages) of items, and to be done properly i believe it takes 3 techs an 8 hour day.

right now in class we have mainly gone over SAFETY SAFETY SAFETY. and basic electrical, now we starting turbine information a little more in depth.

hope this helps,
Max

You've got my respect. Five years ago, I was on top of a new water tower running conduit and installing the FAA lights. That was 140 feet to the top and I found out I DON'T like being up that high.

There's an organization that wants to install a bunch of wind turbines off the coast in the sound, but it's been held up for numerous reasons. I'd like to see them go in to help stop our dependancy on oil.

i have repelled off heights of 120 feet, FUN FUN. you have to be extremely aware of your surrounding and safety gear. AND TRUST your climbing partners.

one of my goals is to work on the off shore wind farms one day, when the seas are rough you get flown in by a helicopter. .

You've got that right. I had instruction from an instructor that worked for a cell tower installation company. And the harness, safety and working lanyards, pelican hook, etc are mine.

Saw a show on TV last night..... In Denmark....A wind turbine with a defective braking system was a runaway! Spinning 4 times the max allowable speed. Centrifical force finally threw a blade and the resulting inbalance twisted the tower like a wet noodle and snapped it off about 50' below the hub. Debris flew 1/4 mile in all directions!
