Weve got some in Illinois, north on I39 by Paw-Paw, and they are building a huge wind farm down by Bloomington Illinois, should be very easy to see from I74. I actually have some coming right in my back yard here in central Illinois also!

Lots of people are complaining, but the way I see it, we had better reap ANY power source we can, right friggin NOW.

The ones down by Bloomington are supposed to be 300 feet tall, and trust me, the blades are every bit of 100 feet long each.

Really impressive!

I saw a couple of windfarms up in Northern Illinois last week when my buddy and I went up to get his new truck. He knew quite a bit about them because his brother-in-law has a company that erects them. I think he is based in South Dakota. My bud's younger brother is working for him now. They stay pretty busy. I think they are a thing of beauty. I will try to keep this from getting political, but it really erks me when the Greenies like the Kennedy's fight to keep them from being erected.

There are a few wind farms in Kansas... there is a large one East of Wichita on US400 and a couple others in the SW... the real stupid part; I think the power goes to someplace in Missouri....

On the aesthetics of these wind farms: Personally I do actually like them- I think that they are pretty and enhance the beauty of a landscape. I think that they sometimes look weird in the planes but perching on the ridge of a mountain they look great IMO.
I've talked to some folks who were concerned about wildlife and they told me that the game did adapt very well to these machines. The deers do actually profit from the machines because the grassy area around them offers some more food. Cows do like to rub their sides against the poles.
I don't know whether you have the same system in the US but over here we get heating electricity for heat storage devices for dirt cheap. The way it works looks like this. The company agrees to deliver this electricity for at least 8 hours per 24 hour period. There is a relais at each customer that can be switched by the supplier- you connect any device that can live with this on/off characteristics like an electrical boiler or a heat storing electrical oven and they get charged when the grid is off peak, and especially when there is much wind. With this system we have the opportunity to have all the comfort we want and have a much lower load on the grid, and the flexibility to use intermittant sources of electricity.

Thats my feeling too.... I'd rather see the mast/proppeller than a sight like a coal-powered or nuke plant......much LESS an eyesore IMHO

I have read they come as big as 300' masts.... with up 175' blades. Anyone know?
Great Pics! I kind of like the look of them also. But they are still a novelty.
Not sure I want to see them everywhere, but since they need steady wind supply, guess that means middle of nowhere or in the mountains.... so no problem?

hEY GUYS - CHECK IN TO WHERE THEY ARE MADE - AND WHO OWNES THEM
THEY JUST PUT TWO UP ABOUT 10 MILES FROM ME - MORE TO COME
THE BIG PROBLEM I SEE IS THIS - THEY ARE MADE IN GERMANY -(MUST BE ONE OF THOSE JOBS WE DON`T WANT TO DO !)
#2 THEY ARE OWNED BY A GERMAN COMPANY AND CONTROLED BY THAT COMPANY ( ACTUAL CONTROL ROOM IS IN GERMANY )
#3 THE PROFIT GOES TO GERMANY !
SSSSSOOOOOOOO- WE ARE TRADING SENDING MONEY TO MIDDLE EAST -TO GERMANY _
HOW DOES THIS MAKE SENSE ?
ARE WE TWO DUMB -LAY OR CHEAP TO BUILD AND OWN OUR OWN WIND GENERATORS ?
SORRY GUYS BUT IT JUST BURNS ME !

vwdry.pk is the ticker for vestas share in the wealth. it is an adr traded stock so not as easy to trade but if you are in the hold gain mode it ought to do ok. ge builds some of the generator parts . no one is stopping usa from building there own. yes it would be nice if they were made here just be glad its not china. i still have long lost reletives in germany they could use the work.
