Because some members used the "Other" category to post threads about anything and everything just to Pad their count.

Post quantity does not necessarily equal post quality

Thanks Ed. Agreed; quantity doesn't equal quality. Why then penalize everyone for the transgressions of the few? Based on the explanations above, I'm assuming the transgressors would always be newer members wanting to become "senior" members? Perhaps edits to the counter code could be added to watch for transgressors and implement warnings or suspend ID's based upon a math score.
Just asking. Nat

Post count actually serves no real purpose other that letting the reader see how many times that person has posted before.

It might help a "Noobie" see if the answer was from someone who "Knows", or someone who "Thinks they know"

Either way it's sometimes a crap shoot...............

I wouldn't mind if we did away with them altogether.

Before, I removed all post counts, and may do it again if it gets out of hand, but this is the first thing I've seen on post counts in quite some time. I don't think most people care anymore. It's fun for a short while, but then, so what?

You're right Jack, and I couldn't care less either way, correct, incorrect or gone altogether. I find it most helpful when noobies post so I can say "welcome" when I offer advise. Thanks, Nat

I think it's good that there is an "other" forum on the DTR- and that the posts don't count.
The post count should reflect how many times somebody has had something to say about diesel trucks.
Bickering on the "other" forum is OK, and I wouldn't want to miss it, but it's somewhere off the intended use of the DTR IMHO.

I'm really content the way it is.

Hey Markus!

On edit.
I've changed my mind, Jack. I read more into your post than was meant. Glad I didn't make you angry. Nat

Don't mind him. He's just grumpy today.

RunningforcoverHoss....

On edit: Actually, I think you're reading more into Jack's post than he meant for you to.

Well, Nat, I think Jack thinks back to the time when some folks would post anything to get their post count up and to become senior members. And also to be able to say " I've got more posts than you"- A time when I didn't envy Jack for the time he had to wade through ... (I woldn't know an appropriate word for it, but it's something a male bovine specimen emits at it's rear end ) and try to keep the site clean. (Only so many moderators and so much to read and check for inappropriate content and language)- So I think it is OK that the posts in the other forum aren't counted. I could also do without the post count.

Jack, withall due respect, I didn't mean to make you angry. I've read and reread your post. Did I do something to make you angry? Nat
I promise I'm not angry. I was just matter of factly stating more than anything. I sometimes don't respond to certain things because it's sometimes impossible to read the context in which it was meant. I promise, if you were here listening to me speak instead of being on the forum, it would just be a friendly conversation about post counts. I'm sorry if you thought I was angry.

Case in point:

Big Blue- 3149 posts= Senior Member
Cowhand- 217 posts= Senior Member

Maybe it's just that some of us have more time than others to sit and type.....

Here goes my effort to rectify my offense.
I must have offended Jack, If so I honestly didn't mean too. But since I might have, let me apologize to Jack before I say anything else and I will edit my offensive post momentarily.

Jack, I enjoy this site better by far than any forum ever because of one thing, no vulgarity is ever tolerated. I enjoy the camaraderie and perhaps I assume literary freedom when I would wiser not. I don't envy your job a bit. This is the cleanest site I've ever had the privilege of taking part in. You're doing a great job and I hope you will continue to take pride in this forum as you obviously already do. Not a responsibility I take lightly! I certainly wouldn’t want it. You won my respect when you removed someone’s pic of Janet Jackson during her infamous not so super Superbowl half-time show. Good going!
My intent was merely to exploit a tangent as I really do not care if the posts are visible or not. But I feel compelled to say, we extol truth often on this forum especially when speaking to members in other countries about U.S. foreign policy and how much we despise slanted media and in short we hate being lied too.
If this is true, then the term “posts” needs to be changed to something more accurate or removed altogether. Else we imply it’s alright to lie.

Nat

ummm, i appreciate your compliments, but now I'm really lost to be honest. My blood pressure never went up a bit on this thread, and I'm not sure how it turned into politics..... Nobody has offended me at all.. I'm not really sure how the thread got to this point, to be honest...
