One major reason is that the frame could never take it. If you ever added a tag axle to a big truck you would see this problem. The frame twists and the cab tries to keep the frame straight. Tandum axle trucks have very heavy cross members to keep the frame rails parallel. It also puts side stress on the springs and hangers that on a pickup truck are not designed for. Been there, done that, drove 1200 miles once with a chain and binder holding the frame together where it broke between the tag axle and the drive axle. Got it home, fixed it.

 

If you look under the Chrysler concept cars page, you will see one called the T-Rex. It was a three axle truck with a 500 horse power V10. It was really awsome but the price of the drive line would put it out of reach and practicality. It sure looked bad though. Then someone copied it and built their own. A lot of money.

TOO HEAVY. I just rebuilt two rearends and an inter axle differential from a big truck. I'll be the first to tell anyone that a dodge ctd is the baddest of the bad. But i'll also be the first to say that even these trucks can't handle that.

 

There is another problem with a three axle concept. Look at the rubber marks trucks leave in tight turns. Over here we do have Pinzgauer 6x6 vehicles. Those are really great to go straight, but if there are tight turns you lose a lot of traction in the rear. <br><br>AlpineRAM

If I'm correct with this I think the T-REX had the quadra steering system. just like the Chebby but both axles moved not just the wheels.<br>DM01
