Why Do You Carry a Gun??
Hoss,
I couldn't have said it better if I had President Bush's speach writer say it for me!!!
I had a CCW in Indiana in the early 90's, since then I have moved back to Michigan, and within the last couple of years they have FINALLY relaxed the CCW permit laws to allow us JOHN Q. PUBLICS to carry. I had my permit with in a month of the law being changed. It cost me $156.00 for all of the 'paperwork and fees', but it's worth the peace of mind to me, IF I ever need it!!! I will gladly pay that amount every 3 years for the choice to protect myself and family.

Why do I carry??? With all that money in the wallet in one hip pocket, I need the 380 in the other to balance the load, so that my lower cheeks are level...
Actually I do have large amounts of money on me when on the truck. I unload in the seedy areas of town in the middle of the night in Atlanta, Birmingham, Montgomery. Sometimes fall asleep in the truck at these sites. Two places in particular are right next door the the local dope motel and prostitution headquarters. I would not dare do that without some sort of protection.
As it is there is one location that I will not off load at night on the north side of Birmingham. Many times I sleep with the OMC backup in the armrest of the dodge. I got a big kick out of it one night. A Georgia trooper had me get out, looked under the seat and in the glovebox, never noticed it in the armrest. He closed the door so I never bothered to tell him. It is not a must tell them state like Lousiana. I had the permit in my hand. Now I keep it clipped to my drivers license. If stopped, I hand them both.
Something else that I started doing is carrying a printout of the Alabama Reciprocal Gun Law in the truck with me so if there is a question I have the info. States I can carry in: Alabama, Alaska, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Lousiana, Michigan, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Utah, Vermont, Wyoming. A few more states would be available but Alabama is not a Shall Issue state. You need to brown nose the Sheriff for a permit. My permit was one of the first issued after the civil rights issues were settled and permits were again issued in this county. Have had it now for over 35 years.

Don't kid yourself. You'll end up in jail for that in Texas.

Concealed permits are 10 bucks for 4 years in South Dakota.
Open carry of an unloaded firearm is legal here.
This state sucks otherwise, but at least our gun laws aren't insane..............yet.

Texas has pretty good laws on the books regarding concealed carry (pretty good meaning it's not hard to get one and there aren't TOO many restrictions), but open carry will get you thrown in jail. That's fine with me though. Tactically speaking, open carry is a bad idea anyway. It takes away the element of surprise that you WOULD have had if you were carrying concealed. You might as well paint a target on your chest because you'll be the first one they aim for.

There are only 4 states that do not allow CCW. Kansas, Nebraska, Wisconsin and Illinois. The rest allow it in some form.

i don't carry one. hell i don't even own a gun (big surprise huh?) but i don't care if anyone else does. i would say that 99% of people that do carry guns have never used them for protection and probably never will. but i realize it is that 1% that might save your life.
i was brought up around guns all my life but i'm not comfortable with them in my house. we have too many friends with kids and as well as i can hide things i'm still afraid that a little one may find them. i couldn't live with that on my consious. i know you can lock them up but i just can't take that chance. while i can teach my daughter gun saftey i can't teach everyone elses child. it's just a personal choice for me.
i'm not saying that it will never happen but i can't ever remember being in a situation where i needed a gun. but believe it or not. i fully support the right to bear arms. so no flames necessary

Hoss, element of surprise is when someone like me or with a much greater degree of martial arts smokes that metal stick clean out of your hands ..
I do agree open carry is too much unless you are a Texas Ranger
...and i do think it's nice to have one in case a gang of thugs has you cornered with weapons of equal strength...otherwise it promotes an arrogance among people, ESPECIALLY the hot shots around here
Oh yeah, anyone curious in buying a 900k volt stun gun? i saw one the other day online...for $79, imagine getting blasted by that bad boy..

I agree with you that 99% of people will never NEED a gun. I hope and pray that I'm in that 99% of people.
That said....I've never needed a seat belt but I still wear them. I've never needed car insurance but I still pay for it. I've never needed a fire extinguisher but I still keep one around the house. I've never needed smoke detectors but I still have one in every room.
A gun is like those things. You hope you never need it....but if you ever DO need it then you need it in a BAD way and you need it RIGHT NOW!

My point was that, in my opinion, open carry is a bad idea unless you're a police officer.

I fully support the constitution though. I agree with you on owning a gun. Everyone in my family and extended family owns a gun. I personally like guns but like I said, we have a bunch of friends that have young children and I just don’t trust my ability to hide, lock, and secure a firearm. We live in a relatively safe neighborhood. Though I understand that crime can happen anywhere I feel safer without the firearm in my house. I could never begin to explain my shortcomings if one of my friends children shot themselves or another with my firearm. I personally feel safer without it.
I hope I and none of you never have to face a situation where you will have to use yours. But it will be nice knowing that you have the ability to protect your family and property.
Britt
