My sympathy.

Years ago my family had an Irish Setter, who's liver was shot. Just when you thought she gave up, she'd eat a little or seem to perk up.

It gave us hope that she might get better, but that was irrational thinking because we were so attached to her. In retrospect we should have had her put to sleep much sooner. I thought I had leaned from that experience, but a few years ago I would have to say I made the same mistake with one of my own pets...

It's tough to take an objective look at an animal you care about and realize that they aren't able to enjoy life much anymore and it isn't going to get better. It's even tougher to do what needs to be done, but your dog trusts you to protect him and save him from pain and suffering...

It sounds to me like you made the right choice. I hope you enjoy the memories of your dog, and that you realize that you provided him with many years in a loving home. My deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Its amazing how close the bond can get between man and beast. My condolences Gieco...Ive been there and done that and am going to have to do it again (and it will be worse than the first time). Rest easy knowing you gave your dog a good life and cared right until the end.

These stories hit me pretty hard, went thru 4 tissues getting this far...Can not imagine losing my best friend Jake, without him I wouldn't be here today. He has saved me twice from bear, and the mental peace he has given me can not be measured. Being a single man in the woods of Alaska, winters can take their toll on you. I was a mental wreck after I lost my wife an kid, so I escaped up here and found this 4 month old pup in a ad, when I went to pick him up he had spent his whole life locked in a bath room and only got out to walk on a leash twice a day. Now he has thousands of acres to run, and he is one of the most awesome guys. The bond we have is incredible, we read each other so well. He was recently diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and is on meds the rest of his life, but he has recovered very well and doing good. And for me, I smile and laugh as me and my best friend explore every day together.....

Sorry about the ramble but I feel your pain man.....

some words to Geico

I recently had to put down my 15 year old aussie mix and it was very hard, what made it even harder was the puppy that we got from the adoption agency had something wrong with his liver and had to be put down at 16 weeks late last year.

Here are some words for Geico

Grieve not, or speak of me with tears,
but laugh and talk of me as if I were beside you ...
I loved you so----- 'twas Heaven here with you .

So sorry for your loss. Like all the input above, I have my own buddy that I put down, 5 years young. Truely was the hardest thing I had to do. Your pup is in a restful peaceful place now.
