It's time to say goodbye, fellas.....

It's been a fun five years, but it's time for me to say goodbye. Truth be told, the issue with my injection and lift pumps back in November really took the wind out of my sails concerning diesel ownership. So I decided to cut my losses and sell my truck. I originally got the Cummins option because of the high mileage I do; no other reason. I don't pull anything and I don't carry loads. It was just the mileage. Everything was fine until the price of diesel skyrocked past gasoline. Then, the possibility of paying for the diesel option with the fuel savings was eliminated. Then the savings benefit thru engine longivity was dashed when I spent $3300.00 on the two pumps. Never in the 40 years that I've been driving had I spent that much money to repair any vehicle.

So I now have an 07 Tahoe waiting for me. It was delivered today and I'll be picking it up shortly. I figured that with the cost of diesel what is is here, I can get 14 mpg with a gasser, and still break even. The Tahoe has cylinder deactivation, so I'm hopeful in getting near the EPA estimates of 21 mpg.

It's been educational, and fun. I guess the biggest laughs I remember came from the now outlawed 2 word story. If you don't know what it is, don't ask!

Who knows, come 5 years from now, I might be looking to get back into a diesel. Presently though with the CARB restrictions here in New England, diesel ownership is impossible unless it's 3/4 ton pickup or larger.

I'll be stopping by the forum from time to time to check up on what's going on with diesel technology. So take care all, don't forget to take your Stanadyne at every fillup, and I'll see you guys down the road.

Well

i can say this, u cannot go wrong with a chevy gasser, if i was a gasser dude again it would be a chevy no doubt. Im sorry bout the loss and issues with the IP, but i can see why it discouraged you, i guess ita done the same for me, well it did once upon a time, explains why i got rid of the IDI...

anyways, best of luck with the new ride and do drop in from time to time.. Good to have others experiences on here with their ctd's whether they own them, owned them, or just plain want them...

We got our trucks on the exact same day, 3/1/2002.

I'm not quite ready to throw in the towel, only have 58K on mine though.

You can still hang out in "Other" though.

i agree on your points.

my latest failure of the 04 was told to me like this:
"we can't figure it out, we are gonna start with a new ECM, then new injection pump, then new injectors."

i was really thinking about buying a used S-10, but only a new CTD had enough rebates to dig me out a barely running CTD.

let us know how the MPG on the Tahoe goes.

you made some good posts on here.

Sorry to see you go Tom (or at least not hang around as much), but I totally understand the change in vehicles. I really like the looks of the new Tahoes, especially the interior (GM finally changed their dashs).

Did the Tahoe come with a Bose system

Ah, that's chump change. I put over $12k in mine in one year. Good luck with the gasser. I wouldn't be too upset if it don't get the 21 mpg. Truthful advertising you know.

Heck I drive a Jetta and I still post here.

Does it make sense that they get 1 mpg more then when they ran on all eight cylinders all the time?

Definitely a classic!!

I hate to see you go Commatoze, but I wish you the best of luck in all that you do. Take care, friend, and don't be afraid to poke your head in the door every once in a while and say hello.
