Thats why there should be a grumpy old Mess Sgt and Army Cooks slinging the beans!

I support hiring handicapped peeps but if you cant see should you be in charge of kitchens?

They closed our base Chow Hall a couple of years ago.
They're converting it into a storage warehouse.
This left the guys and gals nowhere to go but the Fast Food joints in the area off base (SW DC Ghetto) and the Food Court (also fast food) at the BX mall.

I've eaten in the messhalls at Ft McKoy. Was up there in '87 for cold weather training before going to Norway. Of course, back in the day, we brought our cooks with us. If the chow was bad, you knew who to blame. Prior to my retirement in '06 they started civilanizing our chow halls on Camp Pendleton. But there was always a Marine SNCO there behind the line supervising. Boy, times have changed. And Camp Pendleton is hiring civilians to man the gates. What is the Corps coming to?
But the best burgers on Camp Pendleton were the chow hall at Edson Range. Used to love going over there and sit and listen to the DI's yelling at the recruits. Ahhhh, the memories.

Best chow I ever had in a mess hall was from the Army boys at Panzer Kaserne !! They know how to rip up a military recipe card and cook a meal instead !! Sure would hate to see that one privatize.
Now the Navy cooks I have known over the years .... good Lord, they could kill a man's dog

You ever had grilled cheese on raisin bread ??? Washed down with powdered milk .....
We were on emergency rations at the time because we lost a generator that ran the coolers / freezers & ran out of fresh food.
They have been talking about serving frozen dinners on ships for a while now ..... cuts down on space without a big galley. Never had frozen S.O.S. ........ hmmmmmmmmm
Cheers,

I could make some comments from personal experience...
The chow hall on MCAS Beaufort is probably one of the worst ones I have been on, when you walk throw the scullery, you almost puke (I have before on a few occasions) from the smell of raw sewage... and I mean just that... not just nasty food smells. They are building a new one, but it's been like that since I got there in 2000.
One day, a sailor that I worked with and I were eating lunch, and he went to get some salad from the salad bar. I hear him yell and curse at the big salad bowl, and he yells at one of the chowhall workers (one of the nickle an hour chicks) "Hey, Lady, there's a (bleep bleep bleep etc) rat in the salad bowl!" Which there was, one of those field mice. She comes over and looks, and says to him, "Don't worry, they only eat cheese," and walks off.
There was a small commotion in the dining area that day...
On PI, the chow halls are better, but they fog them once a month, and when they turn the gas on, for about the first 5 minutes, it looks like a cockroach stampede... They had to close down the weapons chow hall for over 6 months because raw sewage had been leaking under the building in the crawl space for so long that it was almost a foot deep, and there were dead vermin and roaches all in it...
This one over here has been ok, so far, but they don't know how to cook potatoes... the past 2 days my breakfast potatoes have been raw... cooked just long enough to get soggy, but not brown in the least.

This is coming to you as a civilian and someone on the outside looking in.So set me straight if I need it.
Why would the military hire civilian employees to cook in the first place?
When the men/ women at a base go on training / maneuvers or to war don’t they have cooks that go with them as part of the unit? Why are these not the people that do the cooking on base?
Also whom is the REMF that is in charge of providing food on the base and why does he/she not have to answer, for from what you guys are saying is ( or should be ) a crime.
It seems that with the sacrifices that a GI makes (low pay and giving up family) the least the government could do is feed he/ her good.
Also if the chow halls are bad at a base who would I as a citizen call / write to try to get proper facilities.
Thanks guys I realize that I have a lot to learn.

Well back in '61 at MCRD I didn't hear anyone complain about the food in the mess hall. We all had the "opportunity" to work in the mess hall, and when you were asked everyone said they rrrreallly enjoyed it. Things certainly have changed

I had some not great meals but over all never awful and as a Navy MS Chief told me once when i griped about some midrats.. He Said hey it makes a poop don't it?? (Poop is substituted for his word)
.Did my time in the scullery ...... every sailor, soldier or airman needs to have their turn in the barrel to make them appreciate what they got. Gives em the right to gripe later on too !!

it's hit or miss.
many of the base services are being parcelled out to "Good Will"
Mad can explain who those folks are...
because the Gov't is so inefficient, it costs the GOv't ~$40 to have a ~20 hour employeee.
but contractors operate more efficiently, so thier cost is ~$30 to have a ~20 hour employee.
so the Gov't uses more and more contractors.
they always say, "if you want something done right, do it yourself"
and you can see how it worked out here:
(the guy on the left had a Softail, next guy had a Gold Wing, next guy a custom,i had a night train, and the last guy had a convertible, because he won't tough enough to make his wife let him buy a scooter )
