I don't do luandry I just turn things inside out and spray some cologne on it I moslty practice this method with my underware. Sometimes when I wake up in the morning I don't feel like ironing a shirt so I head down to AA calisters and buy a new one, I have alot of shirts.

I fixed our whirlpool this fall, It locked up like your describing and was tripping the breaker. Took it apart to find it has no belt (direct drive). one motor with two output shafts. one side the gearbox for the drum. the other side was a plastic drain pump.
so i tried turning the motor over by hand, it was locked up. so, by process of elimination i decided to disconnect the plastic drain pump. now with the shaft disconnected from the drain pump, the motor and gearbox would now spin freely.
I pulled the plastic pump out to find it was seezed up. bought a new one from a local supply shop I found in the yellow pages. installed it and were good for another 100,000 miles.

Hey Tye.. turn it over.. if the belt is broken replace the belt.. you can buy one at the local auto parts store..
If the belt is OK. then go and buy a new one.. I finally had to get a new one.. Transmission went out.. it was cheaper to get a new one than to fix the old one..

Check the "Wig-Wag". It's 2 solenoids mounted on a flat bar and is located at the bottom of the transmission. When the washer is agitating back and forth, it sits at the bottom of the transmission....wig-wagging. The solenoids control the transmission. They burn out every now and then. and it's very easy to replace. If you have a VOM, remove the wig-wag and place the probes across the terminals of each solenoid. A high reading indicates a burned out coil. If you ask for a wig-wag at the shop, they'll know exactly what you're talking about.
Id check the little deal on the lid like mad hat was describing too there is a pin thats on the lid that pushes the switch down to show that the lid is closed and safe to run. If that switch goes south it will show the lid is open and not safe to run. I tore mine off attempting to worsh a horse blanket
Did you ever say what brand it was?
I serviced 3 floors of machines at an apartment complex.
Maytag’s had a problem when they got older that when they would spin, socks and small articles would walk up the side of the basket and get caught between the tub and basket and lock them up solid.
Also a transmission failing or transmission shaft bushings seize up.
On direct drive units, a sock in the pump will stop the motor also.
Try reaching under and turn the belt by hand each direction and see if it will move.
Make sure it is unplugged first.
If it is full of water, you do not have to siphon out the nasty water my mouth, just lower the hose to the floor and it will drain.
They had a habit of calling me after the nasty water sat for at least a week and it gets slimy.

Uh, I vote for getting a new washer. Technological advances have been made in the home garment washing industry, look at the spin cycle alone. (more wringing makes for less 220V drying)
Drop about $1600 on a new front loader and matching dryer. They will just about pay for themselves in saved water and electric in a few years.
