Joined US Navy 1963, posted to the USS Morton (DD948) (Saltiest ship in the Fleet), 5 combat tours in Vietnam, left active duty, Radarman 2nd class PO. 1971 Joined USAF, no loss of rank, posted to Luke AFB, 607 TCS, Arizona/ Campion AFS, Alaska,/Alzey Germany/Mt Hebo AFS, Det2 14MWS, Oregon/McChord AFB, 25th NORAD Region, Washington/Rockville AFS, Iceland/USSPACECOMMAND, Cheyenne Mountain Complex-Chidlaw, Colorado Springs Colorado. Retired MSgt, 1987. <br><br>Hey, Chuck 3, Did you know a Gary Hamilton, 276x0 (scope dope), probably an A1C or maybe even a buck sgt at 552nd? I'm a retired US Coast Guard Naval Engineer, 26 years. 5 ships and 14 years at sea. Been to Newfoundland and Antartica and most ports between. I've sailed the calm beautiful South Pacific, and the very turbulant North Atlantic. Chased drug runners on the Spanish Main and crazy fisherman on Georges Banks. Worked on Fairbanks Morse, Alco's, EMD's, Cats, Detroits, Briggs & Stratton, Evinrudes and yes.....Cummins! <br><br>I'M PROUD TO BE AN AMERICAN WHERE AT LEAST I KNOW I'M FREE........

Active duty Navy Chief Damage Controlman / Machinery Repairman with 15 + years in. Started at SIMA Long Beach, Ca. then USS Conserver ARS-39, USS Jason AR-8, Recruiting District KCMO in Springfield, Mo., USS Mount Vernon LSD-39 and currently manager of MWR Auto Hobby Shop in Key West, Fl. (talk about a vacation).

USN 1972 to 1976<br>Left as MM2 in charge of the engine room<br>(them airdales got the fresh air but we got the water)<br>Stationed on USS Iwo Jima LPH 2<br>Operation Nimbus Star - first ship to start de-mining Suez Canal in 1973<br>3 full time med cruises and started a fourth<br>Plenty of time in Gitmo Bay<br>Civilian rescue operation in 74 if I remember right.<br>Other tours I have chose to forget about.<br>Prettiest port, Palma, Spain.<br>Worst port, Naples, Italy.<br><br>The first Iwo was decomissioned in 1993 and they decided to honor the name by building another at Ingels shipyard in Mississippi. This one is LHD 7 and they offered anyone from the first Iwo or still around from the original battle the chance to ride her on her maiden voyage. Took two weeks off, rented a big old Mercury Grand Marquis and took them up on the offer. Remembered then why I got out but was worth the experience.<br><br>The way I see it, it ought to be mandatory that every kid go through a short term anyway. It will make something out of you or at least teach you something that is useful. Don't throw stuff at me, that's just my opinion.

US Navy Sep 68-May 78. Fire Control Technician and Gunners Mate riding Subs and Gun Boats. 7 WestPacs plus a couple of runs up north.<br>Full time Army Guard since May 78. State Missile Maintenance Chief (Close Combat Anti Armor Weapons Systems) and Small Arms Readiness Training Team NCOIC.<br>If everything works out, I've got 1 year, 2 months, and 3 days<br>left.

CALL ALL BOAT SAILORS!!!!!!!!!<br>Going to Turkey in April timeframe to help bring the old USS Razorback SS-394 back to the US and North Little Rock, AR for museum boat. The old girl is in dry dock getting hull survey done. Plans are to sail her back under her own power.<br>We need all the donations of diesel fuel we can get. Those three 11,000 cubic inch Fairbanks-Morse are gonna suck some fuel.<br>Plans are to arrive at pier side in North Little Rock on Memorial Day. Gonna be about a 25 day run. <br>Anyone want to go?

Shovelhead,<br>I've got some recent pics of her when we went to Turkey. Looks like she just came out of the yards. The Turks took real good care of her. She's in as good a shape as some of the boats I rode 30 years ago.
