Are the V10's in 2nd Gens any good?

Have the opportunity to pick up a 1996 2500 with a V10. Its just a bare bones work truck and that fine with me since it will be a farm truck. Just wondering if there are any major issues with them. How many miles are they good for? This one has ~97,000 on it. Thanks!

I only know they are gas hogs and I've seen one that ran as strong as my turned up 97 ctd. I worked with a guy who had that same truck you're looking at and he could get 11 mpg if he babied it enough. Craig

Had a V10 Dodge shop truck years ago. Abused daily and never had any problems with it.

Mine was great! 2001 Quad Cab Sport 4x4. Got 10-12 if I babied it. The transmission was the weak link, like on the Diesels. The V-10 has lots of HP and Torque, just at different places than the diesel, but not too much different - I think the tach had the same redline!

Motor was awesome, but thirsty, while the transmission should be beefed up with a 3-disc TC and a valvebody from Goerend Bros.!

I've heard that those things like to suck fuel. But I'm not to worried about that, it'll just be a farm truck and wont travel to far from home or long distances at a time. Do those trucks have the same driveline as the Cummins powered trucks (minus the Cummins of course )? Its in really good shape so I think we're gonna go pick it up this week.

Those are really tough motors. We had one in a field truck, abused daily and not 1 issue except she drank fuel there was no tomorrow, but work was paying for it, so it was no big deal.

We have an 03 at work with 145,000 miles on it. Cant really complain about performance other than the 6.4 mpg thing. It ain't no Cummins! I can run circles around that thing all day long

Dad's 94 just hit 98K. Its a good truck but loves the fuel, plenty of power and torque. Quiet power that is!
