Upate on "Zorro"
I wasn't commenting so much on your position, more so on the fact that you injected your opinion into the thread knowing AkTALLPAUL seems to love the sport of dog sledding and the people and animals tied to it.
You came across as very callous. I figured a smart man like yourself would understand your comments might be hurtful to Paul.
For the record, I love my dog and would do about anything to save him, within reason. I would seek the guidance of someone more intelligent than myself on the subject matter to properly make the decision at hand.

Bnold-- I once knew a girl that had a large Dalmation named "Classy." She was a great dog.
I have done a little reading on this Mackey fella( had no idea who or what he does), and I have to say what an incredible individual. To do what he has done with barely a fraction of finances and backing as the other teams have is incredible. Truly a homespun honest athlete who I think definatly has a connection with what he does and how to get it done.
Update on dog, "Zorro"
Just a few minutes ago we got a report on Zorro's condition. He has been examined by a veterinary neurologist in Seattle and completed an MRI to fully evaluate his spine. The results suggest that despite significant trauma to Zorro's chest and spine, he is expected to achieve a full recovery over time without surgical intervention. Vets in Seattle say Zorro has nerve damage that may take six to eight months to heal.
Mike D, bnold, Thank you very much for your support.
oscarc...I'm glad you, at least did some reading, kind of why I have been doing these post, hoping that people would learn something about a sport that most people know nothing about.
I haven't seen or heard about it in any news from the outside, so was hopping some of you would find this (the races) interesting.

fought my way here to get the updates Paul!
Indeed, good news and can say that my sled dogs gave it their all, just for public relations runs...when they got hurt- it was like a skier's injuries (spiral fractures with infection in the bone). start at 1300 and go up from there. BUT! I want to be treated like a dog if i had those injuries. very top notch specific care! and true to their promise, the dogs never knew they were injured (one Samoyed had a titanium leg and no one could tell, lived till 16 of bouncing and running).
yes, this site is for the love of the sport and admiration of the dogs and mushers. fantastic update Paul, just what i was looking for. no news down here because Hohn controls the remote.....
j/k
gosh I miss that stuff, and was a volunteer for some Ontario canada club runs, could NEVER see anyone running a sled so carelessly BUT we were not in that ice outback either....
Paul, wanna watch out your window and spot for me? I have to redo my CDL
and NY says I have to do a new road test. I have three companies that will loan me my pick of tractor and van, but no CDL driver to babysit me....

See, that's where we'll part ways of thinking.
I happen to believe very firmly that human life is uniquely special. The Bible says that human beings are made in the image of God-- no other animals are.
Humans aren't just another animal. We have souls and spirits that animals do not have. We can reason and philosophize-- other animals cannot. There is no debate about morals in the animal kingdom--- animals do whatever their instincts tell them to do-- whether that's kill or eat or mate or what have you.
I'd give my life for another human being-- that life is unique to me. But I won't even blink to put down a pet or kill a deer or an elk or whatever, and I'd NEVER sacrifice a human for an animal.
We aren't simply at the top of the food chain-- we are unique.
This used to be unequivocally agreed upon, but since Evolution took hold, the belief that we are just more highly evolved animal set in and people lost hold of the truth of human uniqueness.
The bond the people have with animals is mostly in our minds-- not in the pet's mind. To establish this fact, just look at a typical pounds dog. You can have a good relationship with a pound dog, and that dog will scarcely remember its previous family given enough time and attention from the new family. So the majority of the pet bond is because we ascribe to animals thoughts and feelings that they themselves may not possess.
If a person honestly believes that a dog is the same as a Chicago Cubs player in worth, then I submit that person is should look closer at baseball because they're already out in left field..

I understand my views on this aren't popular, but I'm not expecting them to be and I'm not trying to win someone to my perspective.
My views in this area are also never going to change because it's based on timeless truth. Humans are humans, and animals are animals and that won't change.

I sure did enjoy riding in the basket of my sisters and others sleds. I tried running my sisters sled (only using four of her dogs) once. Got tangled up. Other people could run her dogs without problems—not me. There is so much involved with getting and maintaining a team, even a small one.
Sure do miss Susan Butcher. She was one of the great ones.

You might do just a little more research into what the bible says concerning animals. I don't know of any provision for animals to be present in Heaven via their soul departing the earth but they have long been held to have a spirit and received the same breath of life as did man. There are many of us that would sacrifice allot for our pets as we consider them part of our family. While I agree in part, they do rely on their instincts for survival, they were provided with these because they cannot communicate as we do. They can however, also learn from, care for and interact with us. They love unconditionally and develop loyalties and trust just as old friends do. They grieve the loss of a sibling or friend and we grieve their passing.
At the station I work at we have several pictures and story of a fire in a house in Baltimore Md. The story and photo's are from a Baltimore Sun reporter who was recording the house fire. When FF's arrived on scene they found a working fire so they initiated an attack and a primary search, (no one home) the co. doing the primary found the family pet, (a mixed large breed dog) in the house disoriented from the heat and smoke, so a ff grabbed the dog and carried her out and released her in the front yard, the dog had some minor burn injuries, nothing major. Here is where it gets interesting, the reporter noticed the dog in the neighbors yard standing beside a tree watching the fire ground very intently, unsure of the dog's intent the reporter kept a sharp eye on her. When the fire was knocked down and crews were winding down the ff who rescued the dog came out of the house, removed his pack and sat on the tail board of one of the apparatus taking a break and drinking some water. The reporter noticed the dog starring at the ff and slowly walking toward the ff sitting on the tail board, so he started snapping pictures, the dog walked up to the ff, and gently licked his dirty face as if saying thank you, the dog was pregnant and close to her due date. The reporter closed his story with a single statement, "And people think animals don't have feelings or a conscious". With 20+ ff's on scene and while on air when rescuing the dog, how did the dog know exactly which ff saved her? Instinct alone would have told her to run for safety once out of the house.
Paul, that story has been on the local news down here also.

Tim, that certainly pulls at your heart strings.
I know some folks think different, they've said so, but I do believe pets, especially dogs, have more to give. We are all products of evolution, and we are all still evolving.

Those comments certainly seem consistent with the studies that I have done in the Bible.
With that being said, I've always enjoyed the presence of animals (especially dogs) and like everything else that God has given us I consider them to be a gift that we should cherish and use responsibly.
I'm afraid I've already taken this thread on a course it shouldn't have taken, and I apologize to AKTALLPAUL. Therefore, I will not post any longer in this thread lest it continue farther down the errant path. If anyone would care to continue the discussion, please feel free to PM me. I'd love to further comment on Rick's point, but I can't do so without further taking away from this thread.
Again, my apologies to Paul. I hope for the best for Zorro--he seems like an amazing dog.

Thank you Hohn....apology accepted....Hope you understand that here in Alaska dogs are held up high, they have played a very big part of our history. I know many people up here that owe their lives to dogs. We even have yearly awards for outstanding instances. Take Balto and Togo for instance, the famous lead dogs that carried serum in the "Great Race of Mercy." Each dog on a team has an important position, but it is the leader that must guide them through safely. In addition to having courage and endurance, a leader like Togo must be obedient and have an uncanny instinct to find the trail and sense danger. Had Kaasen an inkling of how wild the storm would rage, he would not have chosen Balto to lead his team out of Bluff. Although Balto was one of Seppala's dogs, he simply was not thought of as a very good leader. But Balto proved his mettle when he plunged into the roaring blizzard, at one point halting to save driver and team from instant death in the Topkok River. Whereas Gunnar Kassen lost any hope to save the children of Nome, Balto, which remembers the way, starts to lead the sledge, and brings back at full speed its team, as well as the invaluable loading, to come safe into port. If anyone on here is in the Central Park area I would like to have a newer pic of the statue.....
Zorro heads back to Alaska
The lead dog for Iditarod winner Lance Mackey is heading back home to Alaska after receiving treatment for severe injuries that initially left him with a 50-50 chance of walking again.

It is good to hear Zorro will heal with time. When I was stationed in Antarctica the Zew Zealand researchers had sled dogs. I have had dogs most of my life. It was hard to put one down. Especailly when you whelp them and see what incredible adults the become. Keith
