Tire Dealer screwed up my Car-Fax History!

..well I had an opportunity to get a free car fax for one of my vehicles, & I chose to see what the history was on my 1994 Dodge 2500 4x4 diesel..The history is clean except for the fact, my tire dealer entered the wrong miles in their reporting. I have a low 239,000 miles on it & they entered 73,000. There are a couple recorded service entry's for tire rotation and wheel alignment, so the miles are correct up until their recent posting. As you all are aware, the dodge diesel engines can go a million miles or so, and now the car-fax has a red flag for my "mileage inconsistency". I called the dealer yesterday, & all he could saw was, its over a year and they can't do anything about it..he said they will check with the system Monday & call me back...I'm restoring the truck, which includes all new body sheet metal and new paint...whenever I sell one of my motorcycles, sleds, cars or trucks, they are so clean, often the first looker will buy it..just wondering what you would do?? thanks

Id get a letter from that tire shop explaining what happened, just so you have documentation of WHY that is on the report..

Sorry, I don't really have any helpful ideas but now that you got me started:

IMO CarFax sucks and there doesn't seem to be anything we can do about it.
While towing my trailer with the truck in Seattle, I let off the brakes and let out the clutch on a hill and kind of forgot to put it in gear.
My trailer lightly touched the car behind me.
Unfortunately it was an new Audi so the slight damage to her grill was a few hundred bucks.
Bottom line is, somehow (police or insurance report) carfax got a hold of that info and
(according to a friend who worked at a dealer) shows my truck as being damaged in an accident.

If you get bored Google carfax sued for $50 million for starters than keep digging. It will really irritate you.

I know this doesn't help you but it makes me feel better to rant about it.

There may be your answer get the letter from the shop and tell car fax to fix it or pay up.

..well, I'll find out this week, what they can or are willing to do. The minimum will be a letter from the tire shop, & notarized, stating they error-ed the entry! I looked over the report & really have to say, car fax is a joke!

I'd call car fax and tell them the tire place is not accurately reporting and risking their reputation.

My dad's rig has some weird stuff on it too re carfax, none of the body shop stuff shows up, just maintenance...it's been repaired about 4 different times from accidents hitting deer......

I can see Carfax going the way of the BBB. It has reached a point now that the Better Business Bureau is a reporting agency for the businesses that PAY to subscribe to BBB. If you refuse to pay their subscription fee, you get a negative report, but they won't tell anyone WHY it's negative. We go around and around with them no less than 3 times a year. Last time we had to have an attorney write them a letter so they'd leave us alone and stop trying to get us to subscribe. Haven't heard from them since but I'm sure they'll be back,

Just found this article. Says a little more about what I went through with the very minor trailer claim.

I wouldn't get too excited if it indeed was a single bad data point. The same thing happened to Brownie the DMV mixed up 2 titles, and my 99K mile truck suddenly had 25K on it for a few weeks, according to Carfax. Obviously the next reporting by the dealership brought her right back to 99K and I never had any issues selling her fro a very good price.

Anyone who can't figure out a single misreport really shouldn't be owning a Cummins, they just ain't that smart.

With the way some dealers are set up if they see that on a report they will flag the title TMU, true mileage unknown , which will lower the value of the truck several thousand dollars.

Funny thing kind of off topic....My 97 Tahoe is listed on the title and registration as being red. It's Silver and has the factory paint code for silver and the original paint is silver. Anytime I have ever had anything apart on it, there is not one drop of red anywhere...

Wonder if carfax thinks it is red, too.....

Yeah, with mine it sort of insinuates that the truck had some sort of terrible body twisting calamity
when in reality the spare tire on the trailer got some dust knocked off the tire cover.

I don't sell things I care about...so I wouldn't care what the carfax said I guess. As long as it doesn't affect how you're insured.

I just bought an 01 Jetta TDI a few weeks ago, on the carfax it's listed as a 2.0 gas motor/auto (was registered that way from day one), when it's really a 1.9 diesel motor/5spd. Turns out there is a difference in it's value, but our agent took care of it on his end, and our current insured value is what we paid for it. Other agencies may not have done that.
