Tire Chains

For the last two days I have had to run tire chains in order to get back and forth to work approximately150 miles. We Have had about 2” of sleet and then about .25” of freezing rain on top of it, you are not going anywhere without chains except in the ditch. My question is has anyone ever had any problems with the steel belts in the tire after running chains for an extended time.

Re: Tire Chains

By the way....I wouldn't put chains on my tires unless it was an extra set of tires that I'd bought just for that purpose...

Re: Tire Chains

bigfoot,<br> The last time I ran chains was in the big ice storms in '78 and '79. I had a '78 GMC at the time, 1 ton 4x4, and the chains didn't cause any problems other than a bumpy ride. I was not running steel belted tires then, so I don't know about the effects of chains with steel belted radials. I have found that the radials will do better with reduced inflation pressures and a little weight in the back of the truck. Other than that, just take it real easy if you have to get out and go somewhere. The only thing I would use chains for these days is getting out to pull people out of ditches and up hills like I used to do years ago. I had chains on all four tires and could pull anything I wanted up hills and out of ditches.

Re: Tire Chains

BTW, I often got back to the house after a day of doing that with about 5 - 7 cases of beer from thankful &quot;donators&quot;.

Re: Tire Chains

Well Hoss I like to play it safe ( you wouldn't understand),not so bad on the go part but chains sure do help on the stopping part . Or when glazed ice is on the hill on fm1382 between the state park and US67. Gave a turd driver a bag of oil dry on that hill last night after I drove around him because he could not move.
