Drugs are what made that kinda music good.

Coupla hits of acid and ANYTHING sounds good. That's the only reason Hendrix was so popular.

Because the people making the music are doing the drugs and you are not.

Actually Hendricks was popular because he was doing things with a guitar and feedback from the Amp that had never been done before. He completely changed the way a guitar was played in Rock and Roll music forever.

To say he was a musical genius is probably a gross understatement, had he survived there is no telling how far he could have taken his talent and Rock and Roll Music as a whole.

I dunno Lary. I'm pretty open minded when it comes to music and I like almost all kinds of it, but the things Hendricks was doing with his guitar and amps were because of the drug induced haze he was in most of the time. Bob Dylan was another one. While his lyrics MAY have been good, he certainly should have got someone else to sing them for him. I'm no singer but I can do better than that! The reason either of these two got as far as they did in their 'careers' is because the people listening to them were using the same drugs the artists were. Millions of records were sold because millions of people were all high, listening to artists that were high. I've often wondered if there would have been as many war protesters if there had been no Hendricks, Dylan or the others who made it their mission to tell everyone that it was wrong to make war and right to protest it.

Well as a Lead Guitarist myself I can tell you that whether he was on drugs or not, he is the single largest influence to modern rock and roll guitar riffs...you can hear his influence in virtually every song played since then, he totally revolutionized the industry.

I don't dispute that he HAS influenced the industry, it's the how and why of it that gets my knickers in a twist!

What do you play Lary?

Drums, Keyboard, Bass, Guitar...I have 7 Guitars here with my two favorites being a Martin Flat Top and My Stratocaster. I am an old Rock and Roller and while I haven't played much in the last couple years, I used to be pretty darn good at it.

I also do back up vocals.....at least I think that is what you would call it.....every time I stepped up to a mic to sing, people started hollering "Back Up!"

Oh and Drugs and Alcohol have had TREMENDOUS influence on music all over the world

That's pretty cool Lary. I HAD an Ovation electric which I sold. Somewhere I still have a Yamaha acoustic, but my favorite is a Taylor 712e acoustic which I absolutely love. Don't play as much as I'd like tho. Gets boring alone.

I've never done drugs, so that's probably why I was never all that good at ANY of them! I don't know if they would really 'fit' with bluegrass anyway.

His Friends wish he knew any song other than Ballad of the Green Beret I would never have figured Top as a Rocker I figured he was one of the Crusty First Shirts that hung out at the NCO club and Player Merle on the Juke Box.

For some reason, I can now see him playing Foggy Mountain Breakdown with Steve Martin!
