time warp...
The Dead....Jerry Garcia was a big fan of Bluegrass...He also played in a BG band with David Grisman...check out the vids...you will be amazed at what they play...If it wasn't for drugs we wouldn't have a lot of the music an arts we have today
great thread!! my two cents:
I was illegally playing hard rock, acid rock, southern rock and country music at 16 in ten cities. disco came in and it was play or not get paid. we quit. it was that simple to us....I was schooled in music, won scholarships/awards, blah blah but went into LEO. music never leaves the soul, picks one up when we are closed from society, inspires us and makes us move to the beat. it's in us all, the human factor.
music is ethereal. period.
ANY point in music can be traced the the 'change". Schubert, Tommy Dorsey, Tammy wynette, Motown, Buddy Holly, hendricks, the animals, frampton, beatles, woodstock,Queen, heck even garth brooks was an average singer but sold his concerts at 19 bucks a seat, and put out 110 percent effort at each venue, and made millions. american idol searches each year for the 'different' voice/style.
yet, you are still will not move me off my opinion that today's music lacks intelligence. if rappers were good, why do they need naked women, swearing, guns/fire and drugs as back up. if brittany spears is called a singer, then I am a model. Give me alicia keys, Zac brown band, Keith Urban, ect. anyday. you don't need to swear, or yell. there's music, and there is showman. music is forever and that video proves it.
tonight, I got to sit in with a zydeco band. and i can't use my left hand much. and it felt wonder making that fender stratocaster (and acoustic in same format!) come alive and watch the people dance and enjoy themselves!
(Topper! you ol' sly dog! 'nother thing in common eh pal?)

Had to look up zydeco. Now I gotta see if there are any samples on the net.
One of my regrets is that I never learned how to play an instrument very well. I own a piano, a bass- acoustic- and electric guitars and learned how to play scales on clarinet, trombone and other instuments that the kids were playing for band. Maybe when I get older I will sit down and learn how to play one of them well. Meanwhile, I do like listening to music.

It is a family thing here as well, Wife plays and sings (was on TV) and I once also had a theme song for a weekly series that I played the guitar in... I had visions of syndication like (I love Lucy)
but sadly it was pulled after 8 episodes.
Grand kids all love music and we already have the 1/4 size guitars and will be sitting around the camp fire this summer teaching them to play along
Their Mommy sings and plays every week in Church as well so they already have a pretty strong background in music.
They keep bugging me to hook up the 12 channel mixer and sound system to show them how it is really done electric style
I will probably do that this Summer and start them off easy with something like "Money for Nothing" or maybe one of my own songs. I really want to concentrate on acoustic for now though

Not at all disagreeing with you but they had to have talent in the first place. You gotta wonder if part of the drug use was due to their mentality (e.g. having the mind set to put up with odd hours and sleeping in a car on the way to becoming a star). Even the Beatles were toking in the very late 50's. Hmmmm, maybe that’s why I can’t play very well. Can’t be because I have no talent.
