Texas boy moved to Pennsylvania... heating oil.

Quick question,

I moved to PA and these houses up here have basements and an oil burning furnace.

What oil is going in there? Kerosene?

My dilemma is I only occupy a house for 2-6 months at a time and I don't want to pay the man a minimum of 150 gallons to come out and add to my tanks and then I have to leave. so I wanted to just get a couple fuel cans and fill 5-10 gallons a day until I get caught up to where the fill level was (1/2) when I moved in.

Thanks

COULD be kerosene but more likely, #2 home heating oil. Same thing as diesel but with red dye in it.

Affirmative, #2 Diesel with red die in it is what is used. Same as offroad diesel fuel.

so If I can find #2 dyed diesel just pour that in, and there will be no furnace issues.

Excellent, thank you.

EDIT: or just use regular #2 but have to pay the taxes ?

You can put regular pump diesel in it. I'm very sure that a DOT guy won't show up to dip your furnace.

Unless, of course, you take your house on the road!

Where in Pa. are you at? Most oil companies have plans where they come out and top the tank every month or so based on your usage. I don't know what is the minimum amount. I have a 1000 gallon inground tank that lasts the whole winter. Keith

Here most people are on natrl gas. Even so, there are two distributers who sell heating oil to people with cans or portable tanks.
In Kenai, for five gallons or less its a 65 cent a gallon difference from Auto diesel.

I live near Johnstown, PA.

If I was planning on staying here a while I would have no problem topping it off, but with my work I could have to pack up and leave tomorrow so I basically want to replenish as I use to cover my rump with the Home owners.

So I just needed to know which fuel to put in there, sounds to me like #2 dyed diesel is the winner.

The minumum order here is 150 gal.

Yeah, if you can find off-road use diesel nearby that's your best bet. It's probably cheaper per gallon than heating oil delivered, at least near me heating oil delivered costs around the same as #2 highway fuel at the pump.

Sent from my Android powered HTC HD2 - how cool is that?

Same here. I think it's a dime cheaper a gallon.

Rob I would guess the machines that you saw were Gamesa Turbines, our new machines are just south of where you mentioned near Beaverdale and Dunlo.

Also, after pouring in 10 gallons of fuel and I didn't see the gauge move I am just going to bite the bullet and call the man to give us the 150 gallon minumum :/ and then I will maintain it after that.
