test/tune with the Scarab today

had a bit of a test/tune session. Did some changes to the carb. Jet extensions, base plate throttle shaft re-bushed, float bowls with quick change jet ports. still have a bit of tweaking but need to hit up the speed shop for a selection of squirters and a REALLY small power valve (only have 4.5 HG of vacuum at idle in gear, 10HG at 2k in gear so the 5.5 and 6.5 PV that I have are way too big), so for now the PV have been removed front and rear with plugs and jetted up (80's in the front, 92's in the rear)

Now that thing finally has enough power to finally pull me up on step.

its only getting better. researching fuel injection now. tired of dealing with a carb! LOL.

problem is that we can put a dude on the moon, but we can't create an O2 sensor that will work in a water injected header!

been reading that some will install an intake with EGR and use the EGR port for the 02 sensor.

looking into a system like this

How much is that thing? I never looked back when I went EFI in 1997 either. Not sure how you would accurately use a O2 sensor in a water environment, but they don't inject the water at the individual runner do they? So long as you are before the water injection, you should be good.

$1750-$1900 for a kit like this. bad thing is that the headers are individually injected with water so there is no place to get a good o2 reading in the main exhaust stream. hearing guys installing EGR capable manifolds and using the crossover between the heads in the intake manifold and installing the o2 sensor there. not sure how accurate it will be though. I just don't want to spend $2500-$3500 on new headers that are jacketed and have o2 ports.

If it is any use, on a lot of the race EFI's we pull the O2 sensor and run without automatic correction to prevent fouling with leaded race fuel. Dunno if that system can do so, but I can on my FAST sequential. You could get a baseline without water passing and then take it out to run it in the water.

wished it were that simple. the way this thing is plumbed for cooling, i have no choice but to run water thru the headers..

will figure something out

You could try a megasquirt injection and "forget" about the O2 sensors.
Or you could make adapters that bolt in between the head and the manifold- just like extremely thick gaskets. Then you can get an O2 sensor into the adapter - I think that about 2" should be enough. (I assume that the header cooling does not come out of the block)

(Not affiliated, but satisfied with the results)

Cheers!

the water is injected into the header via a log under the main body fed by the red hose from the t-stat housing.

you can see the log under the header here

just got off the phone with FAST a little bit ago. Talked to a really helpful guy in Tech dept. He is going to contact the main tech guy and engineers to see if the o2 sensor can be placed in an EGR port on an EGR manifold.

Nice setup. I have a 27' Baja w/a tricked out 502Mag. Lots of fun!
