Taurus Pistols
Taurus Pistols
Does anyone have any experience with the Taurus Millenium Pro or the new 24/7 in .40 cal?? Looking for a new pistol for home defense and concealed carry and I like the looks of these. I would like one that would fit the wifes small hands as well. Any opinions?
I dont have experience with the 24/7 but I have owned a PT145 Millenium for a short time. About the only thing I can say going for it was its compact size for a 45. As far as accurate, it just was not, could not hit anything with it. I believe I replaced it with an XD 40.
Its really hard to beat the SW 642 or 342 in .38 for a CCW. I have the 342 airweight and it always seems the one that I go to over all the other pistols when packing.
Another good weapon to consider is the Springfield XD subcompact.
I would take the wife with you to look for a pistol. Let her put a few rounds down the line with a couple to see which one she likes.

The Springfield XD's are very popular. You might give one of them a try.
The best advice I can give you is to go to a gun range that rents guns and shoot all of the ones that you are interested in. You will find out very quickly which ones you shoot well and which ones fit your hands the best.
After you've settled on a gun, I highly recommend getting some formal training as well. There are some excellent defensive handgun classes out there that are reasonably priced. The first class I took (Beginner's Combat Handgun) really opened my ideas to the fact that I knew VERY little about defensive tactics. After that class I realized that if I were going to take on the responsibility of carrying a gun then I needed to be MORE than competent with it...I need to be PROFICIENT. Since then I take every class I can afford to take.
Now that I've said all of that, it's time to plug my all time favorite pistol...GLOCK. For me, there is no better defensive handgun. It is MADE for combat, and it plays that role VERY well. Its beauty is in its simplicity.
Go HERE and pick which flavor you want and then go rent one and shoot it. I think you'll like...and I know at least a couple of small handed women who shoot them very well.
I have the millinium 45. I like the gun , I use it for my ccw sometimes, other times I carry a glock23. The taurus is a good compact gun and I have fired many rounds without any problems. If your after a ccw for personal saftey I say that its a good choice. I would not recomend a auot for a woman for self defense," most" women tend to panic in a stressful situation. I would recomend a 38 or 357 snub nose revolver, she won't have to guess if its loaded, try to remember what to do in a split second, revolver has 15# trigger pull and all she has to do is squeez the trigger. Those split seconds of not haveing to guess or knowing what to do could save her life. If its in home defense I would get a 12 guage shot gun. Just my .02 By the way I'm not picking on your wife, Ive told mine the same thing, the more she has to do in a panic situation the more she will forget.
I have an XD in 40. and love it, shoots on target, and shoots everytime, never a problem. My brother has a tarus raging bull in 454 casull....not quite what you want for concealed carry, but it does shoot good.
I have the Millenium Pro in 9, 40, and 45. As far as durability, it seems to be a good gun. As far as accuracy, like Monty says above, forget it. The trigger pull is two yards long. It is a good gun for pull point and shoot but hope the target is not too far away. Decent size for CCW but they are all three in the DO NOT CARRY safe.
Also like mentioned above, unless the wife is going to shoot a lot to get use to it, give her a wheel gun. No worry about carrying cocked and locked or worrying about her racking the slide in a bad situation. With the wheel, you just pull point and shoot. Nice little Taurus 38 with some hot hollow point loads and she's good to go.
Sorry Hoss, I live in a GFZ.

Can I get a AMEN!
I've got a 'bull in .454 8 3/8" bbl and MAN can I hit with it.I've never had a pistol that I felt so confident with. Even 'I' can hit pretty accurately out past 100 yards with it. But like acook said, unless you have a natural type "festus" limp, then it ain't quite what you want for CC.
The built in quality and confidence that it does inspire would convince me to buy another Taurus. Besides I haven't heard/read too many bad things about them.

I've gotta ask...are you one of the guys who has never tried Glock and doesn't want to or are you one of they guys who has tried one and just didn't like it? I ask because it seems that the majority of people who don't like them have never even picked one up.
i have shot many many Taurus weapons both revolver and semi-auto.....and own their version of the M-9 Beretta (magazines are interchangeable...LOL)....and have nothing but good comments on the Taurus. Great guns with outstanding warranty and support.
That being said, my brother was looking for a gun and we got him a Springfield XD in .40 with the midlength barrel. he loves it....
Biggest thing in my mind after you decide on a reputable gun manuf...is to go to a shop and test fire one a few times. Some point and just feel right in your hands and some just dont...for no real reason.
I grew up shooting 1911.....shot .38 and M-9 in military and near my last few years I was on assignment with an agency and got to shoot Brownings, HK and Sig firearms. The Sig P220 just fit my large hands perfectly...pointed like my finger....and I loved it. Had to get used to not having a manual safety but with decocking lever I learned quickly and it is now my primary carry gun. Only down side is it is a large gun. I might get one of the P229 guns for concealed as I carried one in Bosnia in a IWB rig and it was sweet.
I would go with 24/7 since it is one you mentioned....I would also shoot a Springfiled XD. Most shops have one on hand to test fire....either would be outstanding weapons from fine companies. I just prefer Sigs these days........but would not feel slighted with either of the others.

I have the PT-145 and have to disagree about it being hard to hit the target with it. Either I am a good shot or the exception. I have been able to consistently put 10 out of 11 shots within 1/4” of each shot where ever I wanted to place the group. It definitely is not a gun for a female shooter (too much kick). I keep two extra clips (hollow point high velocity) with me and carry it with me most of the time. I really like their small 38 for the wife very sweet weapon. It all comes down to what feels best to you.
I believe Glock to be the best for everyday use.
Sigs, Colts and HKs are beautiful to look at, and work very well, once you get the safety off.
For your wife may I suggest a hammerless .38 like a Smith and Wesson 642 or if you must have a Taurus (made in S. America) the model 850ss.
Do investigate, and test fire at your local indoor range.
If your wife is up to it the Glock comes in .380 and 9mm
advantage here is the 10 shot cap (but only 5.5lb trigger pull).

Hoss...
I have shot and held the glock many times..
With me it isn't that I dont' like it I just perfer other guns...
My favorite is my HKP7M13. It is a little heavy for concealed carry with 13 rounds in the magazine but it is the nicest gun I have ever shot...
I have a couple of Barettas 92FS's and like those.. They always fire even with minimal maintence and will fire over 500 rounds without needing oil.
The Sigs, Glocks and others I see at the range seem to start jamming after about 300 rounds if not oiled.

I had considered a wheel gun for her, she has shot a couple of mine and seems to like them, however accuracy was a concern (on single action), I know in a stressful situation that would warrant the use of a firearm accuracy would be decreased anyway. But there are benefits to both, one being more mag capacity and a simple safety off and pull the trigger, I do like the simplicity of a wheel gun, I don't know. I have shot the 1911s alot and like them a good bit but have heard negative things about them when used by smaller female hands. I have a buddy who also happens to be a gunsmith and a security contractor who also swears by his Glocks and is going to let me test them soon. I agree most of the people who hate Glocks have never even fired a single round from one. And for home use we do have an 870 with an 18 1/2" barrel and loaded up with ghost ring sights and good 'ol #6's, with a Surefire tac light by its side.

Most women can handle a 9mm quite nicely though. I taught a friend of mine from church to shoot a Glock 26. She's 5'-5" and 115 pounds of pure redhead. Despite her small size, she handled the little Glock wonderfully.
Also, the mag capacity of a 9mm Glock is 10 rounds for the G26, 15 rounds for the G19 and 17 rounds for the G17 (subcompact, compact and full size, respectively).

When I go to the range I typically shoot 500-600 rounds in a couple hours time and I never stop to oil the gun during the session. It simply doesn't need it. After literally thousands of rounds down range, none of the Glocks I have ever owned have jammed even once. Not even my ole' reliable Ruger P90 could make that claim and it was near flawless (just too big to carry). That's why I trust them to be there for me if, Lord forbid, I ever need them.
You will not find a gun that is easier to maintain than a Glock.
If you can't tell, I'm a huge Glock fan. I don't like it when people say bad things about them.
