Switching from Propane to Natural Gas????

Well, started calling around to get the tank filled up for the winter. And Shocking to see propane prices at $2.40/gal+ with a minimum of 100-150gal. needed to deliver. I have a utility gas line ran to the house but never used it. Called to find out the price of gas and after the btu/cfm to gallon conversion its about $1.40/gal. Even at the lower efficiency of nat gas vs. propne, and the converting/hook-up costs, it's still gonna be way cheaper. Usually a factor of 1.2-1.3 to 1 natgas vs. propane. So I'm asking if anyone here has done the conversion either way and regreted it???

Don't forget to factor in all the other fees utility companys tend to come up with. Our actually electric usage is about 40% of our bill.

No. Its because you, I and all the others let them. Leave the government out of it they have way too much influence in our lives the way it is.
Call them and tell them what you think. I did. Manager of the gas company hung up on me. I called him back and told him if he ever hung up on me again, I'd personally come down there and get in his face. Did not promise him physical violence. Then called his boss and had a chat with him too. They didn't lower my gas bill but there is absolutely no doubt in their minds that I am not happy with them and that I think they are cheats, liars and crooks.
Will be changing gas companies sometime soon, these folks, Blue Gas, suck. The next ones might not be any better but I will give them a chance. They charged me $2.39, 3 years ago they promised me that it would never go over $1.50, wish I had that in writing.
Natural will be going up real soon too.

They dont deliver anything? So you installed all the pipes, meters, and monitor and maintain all of them?

Delivery and taxes on my power exceeds 50% also..

Go with natural gas, it will go up, yes, but overall should stay cheaper than propane.

Luckily, I'm on a TVA powered grid here where I live, so my electric rates are among the lowest in the country. As far as the extra charges on utility gas goes, I will give them a call tomorrow and ask what the %'s are of a total bill's charge. Looks like I'll be switching though. Sure wish it was easier to go back and forth, that way I can go whichever way is cheaper.

besides distribution charges and meter charges and so forth there is usually only one company that you can use for your nat gas. in many areas there are several propane companies that have to compete for you business and keep prices in check.

I like propane. I feel "Less" on the grid that way. Plus I can "time" my purchase/contract.

My annual propane cost this season should be 700gal * 1.59 gallon.
A little over $1,100 for the year. I wish it wasn't that high, but it sure beats being cold.

Of course when the in-laws visit I have to supplement with electric heat and of course my beer expense goes up. Garages sure are nice.

I only use propane for my water heater and cook stove. Thankfully I heat with wood. And I also like the propane because I'm not at one companies mercy on pricing. if you own your own propane tank you can call around and get a better deal although I only burn about 300 gallons a year anyway.

well look at you bill carefully and also check with your local gas regulating agency.. I work for the largest nat gas distributor in the country (so Cal Gas).. there is what they call the base line.. and that gas there is no profit on... they only make the transportation charge.. the customer charge (in our case) is free appliance maintence, line maintence, meter maintence and meter reading. also how do you think the gas is moved.. there are compressors to be run, regulator stations to be monitored and maintained etc...

The other great thing about piped in Nat gas is you never run out or have to worry about calling to refuel your tank.. It is safer because it is lighter than air so it disipates into the atmosphere if you have a leak (unlike propane that settles to the lowest point and stays there till you ignite it or sweep it out).

After basline well then we do make money on the gas...

To convert to natural gas you will need to add a regulator to each appliance and change the orifaces.. in some appliance you can order a conversion kit but in some you may just need to buy new controls for them.. Check with your Nat gas company.. I know ours will convert for free less including oriface resizeing) and labor for free if you supply the necessay controls and regulators..
