Subic Bay

Hi all,
I was wondering if anyone in here have ever been stationed @Subic Bay or Clark AFB.Or have you ever visited there.
The reason im asking is,my mom is in the hospital, she is trying to recover form a stroke.Well I have never met my father ever, and out of the blue he showed up @ the hospital,I am 38 years old and have never met him and my mom never talked about him ever.
Well anyway I didn't know he was my dad until later he told me.Well I wasn't really upset when he told me,maybe it hasn't sunk in yet,but he was telling me stories of his like, and I guess form 1979 til 1992 he was stationed @ Subic 2 different tours.1979 til 1982,and they form 1988 til 1992,he was one of the last to leave Subic.
He tells me how great it was over there and I have been glued to the internet to find out all I can about it.Anyway he lives in the Philippines. But does anyone have any stories from there Navy or AF days.
I know it is silly but I find myself wanting to see were my dad was and to hear others with there stories...Thanks

God Bless Our Troops.

Re:Subic Bay

The last time I was there was 1972. Pulled in on my senior cruise courtesy of the US Navy. Subic Bay. Fond memories. Unfortunately, I wasn't there to check out the infrastructure. It was actually a lot of fun. People were friendly, prices low. They had a little river that we called the river that we had to cross to get into town. Sewerage, trash, tires, you name it. Food in town was great, cheap.

My mother lived at Clark for three years about the same time. She really liked it there. Had a live in maid for about $40 a month. My step father's salary as an AF Master Sgt went a long way there.

Biggest problem now is some of the anti-American sentiment in the outlying areas.

Re:Subic Bay

I've been there a number of times (normally a few days to a week), but was never stationed there. First time was in the early 80's; the post Jolo's era - it burned down. Have crossed that river many many times - I've still got some pics.

I remember it raining alot, I remember sailors on a CV fighting a raging fuel fire tied to the pier as the fuel rolled down the side of the ship down into the water.

The "Bario" was a great place to hang out. Rolling into town on the dirtroad on a jitney (kawasaki 90? w/covered sidehack), with the typical hung-over feeling, it reminded me of the mental image I have of an olden day "pirate town". It was great.

Gaines Beach was across the Bay and was a great place to relax and throw a party. No Power, thatched huts, real iced beer, and more - much more. We worked hard, and played hard.

yeah, I too have "fond" memories .......

God Bless our Troops!

Re:Subic Bay

Hi there,
I was there in 2000. Lots has changed. The base has been turned over to the city and is open to the public. The "S**t River Queens" no longer hang out by the bridge waiting for GI's to toss peso's to them. (still just as nasty looking). There isn't as many bars as there once was. Many of the buildings have been burned out or abandoned.

The Barrio was fun ... but the jeepme drivers had a pretty good scam going to get $$ out of us.

Rained like crazy off and on the entire time we were there.
Lots of good food and plenty of adult entertainment to go around (if that is what the plan of the day included).
The last report that I saw listed PI as restricted to military. Apparently the country has lots of internal problems.

PISTOL

Re:Subic Bay

Thanks for the info guys.
My dad was telling me that the anti american sentiment is real bad over there. He said americans have big targets on there backs. How soon they forget.
I cannot believe how France and Germany is treating us right now,I just don't understand it.
the French are defacing the headstones of our dead that have been barried over there during WW2.This is sickening.
Anyway he said it is real bad over there if you are american

The French. The biggest mistake we made was liberating France from Germany. What were we thinking?

Re:Subic Bay

Hey Shortround, thanks for that URL.

Its a shame reading of the anti-American sentiment over there. Since our military forces left, they probably blame us for their all of their woes. We were their number one industry. I bet the folks who made the decisions to cease funding over there were never there, and all of us sailors and soldiers have nothing but fond memories of PI and the local people there.

How can anyone forget San Miguel beer? And balut?
