Stereo advise
Re:Stereo advise
not trying to start an argument but bear with me .........
download jl audio's 100/1 amp owners manual rail voltage across the speaker terminals for 1000 watts @ 4 ohms is 63.2 volts. so to make 1000 watts that means 15.8 amps of current
rail voltage for 1.5 ohms is 38.7 volts .......so that means 25.8 amps of current
those numbers are for only 1000 watts ........imagine 6kw
that's a lot of current for 16 gauge wire
I was running 1000 watts through each peice of 12 guage wire to each sub at 4 ohms after an 8 hour trip on the highway with the stereo cranked up for the whole trip the wire was warm to the touch ......(you could cook a steak on the amps too, who needs a george forman
)
you can never have too big of wire...........but yourt right it's not always needed..........just make sure it's a good quality wire.......16 guage is as small as I'd go

Re:Stereo advise
Im not tryin to start an arguement Im just saying. How far do you run your spkr wire? Mine only run about 2-3 feet so maybe thats why mine never get hot.
Re:Stereo advise
no arguments .....you're right you won't have problems when competeing since it's only short 30 second burts any how .............and yes shorter runs will have less resistance

Re:Stereo advise
I have a 2 gauge lead from battery to the terminal for my amps with a monster fuse [170 amp I think]...then 4 gauge to the amps from there.
Its a bit of a pain trying to fit even the 2 gauge into those holes on terminal. 4 gauge barely fits in the amps too.

I use one gauge for my jumper cables...Jaimie...post a pic of how that 1 gauge looks in the truck.
Bound to put a wrinkle in the carpet if yer runnin' it in the cab eh? EH?

Re:Stereo advise
Yeah they put in a wrinkle alright! I have em run underneath the truck sorry no pics of wrinkled carpet for me! I like it under my truck plus its not a winter driver! I have a nice sheething it rides in and finished it off clean you cannot even tell where it is. Its just basic 1 GA welding cable. Then it breaks like scotties to 4GA and yeah those amps are hard to get the big wire on. Get some spades works good.
Re:Stereo advise
I've been thinkin bout upgrading my speaker wire to some 16ga. Maybe even 14. I've got 18ga on there now. I've got 4ga running from my battery to my amp (1500wx1) and I've got like 18ga wire run for the subs (gonna upgrade that to 16 or 14). I'm thinking the 4ga might be to small cause I just recently melted the fuse holder on it.
Yall think a 60amp fuse is to small?
I've got the tweeters for my components mounted in the top of the doors. They are easy to adjust and the sound is perfect.

Re:Stereo advise
I got this fuse free...LOL
I am planning on running ALL of my stuff underneath on the new truck. That 1 gauge is actually 4 strands of 4 gauge woven correct?
Good thread here. Help me out lots guys.
Thanks ;D

Re:Stereo advise
1ga is sometimes 4 stards if 4ga woven but sometimes its all 1 group. I run aut gauge which is 0ga. that stuff is thicker then heck. Jaime you probaly seen it before. I run 2 0ga for the sub amps and then to run a 4ga to the amps for the highs. My wiring is a big PITA but its all worth it when you see the looks on peple's faces and when you get these trophys. ;D
