starting to think about CCW

Teen gunman kills 5 in Utah mall rampage
18-year-old wounds 4 more before being killed by police; motive unknown

Is it me or are more of these kinds of random shooting starting to happen? Right now, I don't even own a gun but I would like to take up shooting at some point. Beyond the proper firearm "handling" training how should someone prepare and train mentally to legally carry? Being a new father to a beautiful baby girl I find myself remiss not being able defend her and my wife if the situation called for it.

Try this. It was discussed pretty thoroughly.

i like having mine. theres no telling when your going to be placed in a position to have to defend yourself or your loved ones.

the main reason i got mine was last new years i think there was a college guy home from school. he was a kicker i think for TCU football. well he was with his gf coming home to the apartments where one of them lived and a crazy guy followed them there, walked up to the drivers door and shot him point blnak with a rifle killing him for no apparent reason. crazy, unexplainable things happen

Finding somewhere nearby that offers a few good defensive handgun classes will help you prepare both physically AND mentally. Carrying a gun is a HUGE responsibility. It isn't something to be taken lightly. You're on the right track.

As you don't have your "real" locaton posted, it's difficult to comment on CCW requirements. There are several states that still have no provision for a private citizen to legally carry.

This website has state by state info.

www.packing.org

I've been legally carrying for 20 years. Had permits in Michigan, Florida, Texas and Tennessee. When I first started carrying, I was bit nervous about it. Now, when I foget to drop my keltec in my pocket, I'm nervous.

One bit of advice on what gun to carry. Choose something you will carry ALL THE TIME! Many gun "experts" will tell you a 9mm is the minimum. My position is that it's better to be carrying a little .32 or .380 like the Keltec than a 9mm that you can't comfortably carry concealed so leave at home. I made all those expensive mistakes. A 1911 or Glock is difficult for an average size guy to conceal. The little Keltecs will drop in your back pocket and not show with a print preventer. I cut a piece of semi stiff plastic out of a laundry detergent bottle and shaped it to fit inside my jeans pocket. Drop the .380 in, muzzle up behind the plastic piece. Doesn't show at all. No more bother to carry than a wallet. I've got 9s, 45s, etc, but all are too big to conceal easily, winter or summer.

As far a concern about use, don't sweat it. If it comes down to shooting or dying, you will shoot. Oh, something a firearms instructor told me in a CCW class. If you do shoot, you may or may not be criminally charged, but, you WILL be sued. In present day America, it's apparently a violation of a criminal's civil rights to shoot him to prevent him from harming you. But, all that being said, I'd rather shoot and be sued than be dead and not sued.

I've been lax in when and where I carry, just running to the store, I'd leave it at home, just going to fill up the truck, I'd leave it home.

But based on the incidents of yesterday,
less than a mile from where I am currently typing this,
I am now carrying everywhere and all the time.

Except of course where carrying is illegal, post offices, state and federal buildings,
but what's to stop a bad guy from carrying into those places?

Packing.org has gone downhill.. I prefer http://Handgunlaw.us because it is more up to date.
