starting old tractor

I have an older 480 case diesel tractor that a friend ran low on fuel then it sat at my house for months without use. I can not get it to run now. I took a towel soaked in gasoline and placed that on the intake and it fires right up, but dies after a few seconds. What could be the problem? I'm thinking maybe the floats are not opening, but I don't know. Thanks for your time

Try running it on WD40 sprayed into the intake until it picks up.

Used to do that with the old Massey when we ran it out of fuel and she would take a while to fire off.

I think he has a gas engine, not diesel.

Sounds like it's just not getting any gas to or through the carb. Choke it and coax it along with your rag for a while to see if it clears up and runs.

BlackDodge, is it a diesel as you posted or a Gas unit?

I know this sounds stupid and probably wont apply to you, but after you have made sure its pumping fuel try whacking the float area with a rubber mallet. Sometimes it will jar things enough to get the float valve to open.

With the optional water wings and raft attachment the Case tractor will float (need to find the part number). This is what happens when the thread starter (BLACKDODGE) doesnt come back soon enough to monitor where his post is heading.

Chaikwa,

If anybody knows about the magic if editing, it's you.

Now back to your regular confusion.

It runs on a gas soaked rag and it has a float. Yesterday the word diesel was not there. Now we're all confused.
