Springfield XD-45

I'm a HUGE fan of Glock handguns and I happen to WANT (I say NEED, but my wife says WANT) a .45 ACP caliber pistol. I've been considering getting a Glock 21 for a long time, but I thought I'd wait until the new Glock 21SF comes out early next year before deciding which one to get (the G21SF is supposed to have a slimmed down grip and better grip angle).

But, MAN if the Springfield XD-45 doesn't look tempting!! I've shot a friend's 9mm XD and it felt REALLY good in my hands and it pointed very naturally for me. The only thing I don't like is the external safety. After shooting Glocks for many years, carrying a gun with an external safety could get you killed.

Anyone have the XD-45? What do you think of it??

Excellent, i have the 5" tactical model, XD9505SP06.

I dont use for defense or carry, just sporting.

Its only a 9 round capacity and one in the chute, so 4 less than the ACP version.

Feels really good to me.

Shoots real nice, I was at a combat pistol course a few weeks ago and one of the guys had his brand new one there. We put about 400 rounds through our pistols that day, and neither his XD nor my Springfield GI model had a malfunction that couldn't be traced to operator malfunction (I had one stovepipe on a magazine I loaded in the dark, so I'm blaming that one on me). For carry, though, I've been looking at the Seecamp .32. Put the laser slipper on there and it looks just like a wallet.

I like the xd, but I just bought a glock 36, for a concealed weapon. I would have bought a xd but they don't have a compact 45.

A buddy of mine has an XD, I haven't shot it a WHOLE lot, but every time I have, I've been impressed. Plan on getting myself one at some point.

Can you legally carry a 14 round pistol there Hoss? Could you expand on the external safety part? All I see extra is a grip safety on the back.

I'm thinking of getting an XD after the first of the year... Anyone else care to comment on this piece?

Hopefully I can get my hands on one to test it out before I make an order...

btw- already have a Springfield1911 .45acp so I wouldn't mind getting the XD in .40S&W... give me a reason to get some new reloading supplies for my Dillon SDB.

There's no limit on how many rounds a handgun can hold. The "Clinton Ban" was lifted a couple of years ago. My G17 holds 18 rounds and my G22 holds 16 rounds.

Unlike the Glock, the Springfield has an external safety right behind the trigger. That's just one other thing you have to remember to disengage before you shoot the gun.

You don't have to disengage the safety if you don't engage it in the first place! I think the trigger and grip safety are more than enough in a "carry" situation. Now my 1911 is always cocked n locked...

That trigger safety (if I'm looking at the right one) looks similar to the Glock safety. (which I thought was weird not to have to do anything other than make sure your finger is on the bottom of the trigger)

Disclaimer----I own a Glock 17(9mm) and a XD 45ACP Service(4" 13+1 round). Love them both.

There is no "extra safety" on the XD. Just pick up the pistol, and pull the trigger. The only difference in a Glock safety and the XD's safeties is the addition of the grip safety on the XD. IMHO, I prefer the grip safety, as you actually have to hold the pistol to make it fire-unlike Glock.

The XD points, and shoots very nicely. It fits my hand VERY well. For me, it has been 100% reliable for over 2500 rounds, with VERY little noticeable wear. With the initial XD line, there were finish problems for the metal, and cracking problems near the breech. These have been long since been solved--before I bought the 1 I have now. My only issue with the XD, is the front of the barrel and the front site gets dirty if you shoot more than 200 rounds. I solved this by switching to CCI Blazer for cheap plinking ammo--that Walmart WWB was WAY too dirty. Another tweak I did was put a dot of Testors neon red gloss enamel on the front site(covering up the white dot). I'm as happy as can be.

I have been looking at the XD Compact or a XD Subcompact.
