Speeding ticket in Virginia?
Speeding ticket in Virginia?
Can any of you Virginia boys offer any recommendations of attorneys in or around Abingdon, VA or Washington County, VA? We're headed to TS Performance Event in Bowling Green, KY and got a ticket in VA on the way through.........
Didn't think they'd mess with us at 15 over at 5 AM but it wasn't the highway man,....young county sheriff about 21 years old.
Anyway, any suggestions greatly appreciated!
BTW, does anyone know if a VA ticket with a NC drivers license on DMV points or Insurance?
Thanks for the help,

I have went to court on about 15 of my tickets and saved literally thousands of dollars and countless points.
Using my last do-do experience as an example.
I-95 Northbound clocked at 87 mph in a posted 65. Real nice trooper, wrote me for the full speed, $290 fine carries 5 points.
Went to court in Baltimore Co., told the Judge the truth, got the fine reduced to $80.00, $15.00 court cost NO points. (not a typo, zero points on my record).
I worry more about the insurance rates then I do the actual fines or time spent defending the violations.

Real count is probably more like 25.First one less than 30 day's into even possessing a drivers license.
I wasn't really proud of that part, just the success with showing up for court rather than paying by mail.
Several people in Law Enforcement have told me to NEVER just mail it in. A couple of factors I didn't go into though:
1) I'm self employed, I have time to do stuff like this.
2) None of my experience has been out of state.
The coppers down there don't mess around. I drove my old Road Runner down that way many years ago and got pulled over for speeding. The officer really liked my lime green machine and talked to me about it for a few minutes. I thought "Cool, he's just going to give me a warning!". Unfortunately the whole time we were talking he was writing me up!!
Good luck.....

Derek, you are living in a dreamworld. Wake up dude.
PJ, I agree, you NEVER just pay it. Bad thing is it is 3 hours from home so a day off work would be a pain in the ****. It would be better use of time and money to pay an attorney to get rid of it. Did an internet search and couldn't find a good option, but I'm sure my buddy will likely get plenty of letters from attorneys in VA so he'll probably be good. I know I got plenty of letters last ticket I got at home....went to court and got it reduced myself to improper equipment - no points.
Camotanker, it was awesome. We are drinving home right now. 2 Rail cummins. Awesome pro-street class. And just some awesome trucks in every event. Unfortunately, a Duramax won the pro street. This was a guy from NC who really got it hooked up and broke into the 10's for the first time. He ran a 10.87 I think to beat the TS Performance truck for the championship. The TS ran a 11.27 or so. The Dmax had also run a 10.98 or so to beat Jeff Garmin to get into the finals. Garmin launched awesome but got out of the groove and was coming over near the Duramax so he had to back out of it. It's too bad, that was a dead nuts race and would have been really close. Congrats to all that were there running, there was some NICE hardware there. The Bully Dog truck was there, but we missed it. I don't think it ran well, maybe 14's? It was hot and humid so the times were probably pretty good since the weather wasn't particularly helping.
Cool day and my buddy took the ticket in stride.

Virginia almost always will let you off with no points if you pay court costs and go to driver improvement class. 8 hours on a saturday, costs $50. It sucks, but you don't get a record or points or rate hikes. Most people I knew when I lived in Richmond had been at least once, including me. The only thing I learned in that class is if a school bus stops on the other side of the road, you only have to stop if the pavement joins the pavement on the other side. Kinda weird I reckon.
PJ, you're the man! I don't feel bad now. I got nailed coming out of the harbor tunnel one night - I smiled when I heard the bad news; I wondered if he could smell the brakes cooking.
PBJ.. and it isn't Peanut Butter and Jelly.
But what happens after violation #2 or 3? or 14 or 15? Were they that outside of a year?

HEHE HEH yeah, we have ALL been there! Got to read my profile to get this but:
Never just plead GUILTY. Please fill out the back of the ticket for NOT GUILTY and let them set a trial date. Call the District Attorney's office for that Court and ask for a reduction to equipment violation or parking violation.
do not even think of 'dismissed in the interest of Justice' as most States have on the books. and please be reasonable with your request, knowing that 200 bucks now CAN save you immense hassle as described by the DTR guys above( insurance, Court, DMV points build up, etc.). You can also send in your written account of what was going on.
Please do NOT talk about the cop or whatever, this is a different sandbox to play in- just the facts and what you did or did not do/see.
Judges want to clear their cases, States want their money.
Biggest tick off to me, personally, is when someone thinks they are going to play Hollywood lawyer or someone who claims total innocence.
Even the minimum amount can be assessed as a fine with no penalty if that is better for you. Sometimes people have different priorities BUT everyone should know what is at stake and what they can ask for- hence my humble advice: Call the DA after you CRR (certified return receipt)mail in the not Guilty plea. They are the ones that will make the deal, it is up to you to make it fit right. Don't Speed??? naw...........................

PBJ's will only get you so far. When you go to court (in MD at least) there is no evidence for the judge except for the officers testimony. In other words, they don't pull your record to see what you are up to. Thing is, they ASK, so you don't want to perjure yourself by saying you hadn't had any tickets or PBJ's in the last year if you really have.
My ticket are about 60/40 Maryland/Delaware, but I've always lived within 10 miles or so of the DE line, so I spent a lot of time there.
My luck is going to run out, I just wanted to provide you guys with an example of what can happen if you use your brain in regards to traffic violation.
On a side note, at 17 my wife got 24 points in one incident/accident. She lost her license for over a year and a half and was sued by two different families.
(No humorous, just thought I would share)

The fact of the matter is, if your doing wrong, you deserve to be punished, whether you get caught or not. I have done more than my fair share of speeding so far in my life, and so far have not got caught and while I am not going to go and turn myself in, it is still wrong. I always hear people at work getting mad at cops for setting up speed traps, or hiding somewhere so if your speeding you wont see them until its too late. But I dont see anything wrong with that, if you dont want a ticket, then dont speed, plain and simple. If you speed and get caught, pay up, you were driving, you were speeding, its your fault. Take responsibility for your actions.
I hope this dont start a war...just voicing my opinion.

My father had a ole 69, nice 383 worked up, cragiers (sp) sweet car, around 10.5 second 1/4's. Sold it back in 84 for 2K, yeah me >
But he spend the little money he made on me (should have kept the car)
That would have been a great car to own. I really love those cars, sweet.P.S. I'm gonna await pictures
Like I said in a previous post, it's a revenue thing man, a revenue thing.
Last one I got was 78 in a 55 (was racing an old man driving a 225 Buick of all things with my van). My insurance went from $1000 a year to $3600 a year and five points.
That was about 18 years ago or more and I don't do it any more. Don't want the hassle and don't like contributing excess money to the insurance institute. I pay about $1400 a year now of four vehicles and that includes full coverage on two. I don't like that either but what's a fella to do?
