If a patrol car is pulled over to the side of the road, you have to change to the next lane (away from the stopped vehicle) or slow down by 20 mph. Every state except New York, Hawaii, and Maryland, and the D.C. has this law. In California, the "Move-over" law became operative on January 1, 2010. http://www.moveoveramerica.com/ A friend's son got a ticket for this recently. A police car (turned out it was 2 police cars) was on the side of the road giving a ticket to someone else. He slowed down to pass but did not move into the other lane. The second police car immediately pulled him over and gave him a ticket. He had never heard of the law. It is a fairly new law that states if any emergency vehicle is on the side of the road, if you are able, you are to move into the far lane.

The cost of the ticket was $754, with 3 points on your license and a mandatory court appearance. Please let everyone you know that drives about this new law. It is true (see details at the following web address). http://www.snopes.com/politics/traffic/moveover.asp

Indiana got that law a few years ago after several police officers were killed by vehicles hitting them from behind. Before I ever got my license I was taught to get over. I still remember heading down the road on a pretty nasty winter day and my dad told me to get in the left lane in case the driver of that semi came around the front. As I got closer, he opened the door and started to climb out. He lost his grip and I hit the brakes. My bumper stopped just PAST his head. Had I not gotten over, I would have plastered him. That has stayed with me for the last 40 years and I make sure when I'm teaching a nice or nephew to drive that I teach them that lesson. The move over law doesn't really affect me as I do it anyway. I also give road workers, pedestrians, bicyclists and such a little extra room when I can in case something happens and they end up in my lane.

There are some people who I think need to be pulled off the road. I went to pull my fathers license after he went blind but was still driving. When I ran the number though, I found that it had expired 4 years before.

I was directing traffic at a ball game once and the first car blocking the left lane was my unit car, a long stretch of road flares and my chiefs car at the front. I had one old lady drive to the right of my unit, back into the left lane and as I was blowing my whistle to get my chiefs attention, she plowed into the rear of his car. The lights were going on all of them. She said she didn't see two big white police cars with lights flashing and they shouldn't have been there.

As for speed traps, we've got one here that will really baffle you. One section is a reduced speed by a school during certain times. I don't have a problem with that part. In fact, I think it's a good idea. However, the limit, not counting the school zone, goes from 55 to 60, to 50, to 60, to 55, to 60 and then to 55. On one section it is 60 on one side and 55 on the other. There is also a curve right at the county live where a state cop likes to sit. When he is on his motorcycle, you don't see him. He'll shoot his LIDAR over the bike, flip the lights on and motion for you to pull over. I've heard he often will stop 15 to 20 cars without ever moving.

I agree 100% with ticketing people that dont yield to stopped emergency vehicles. I lane change whenever I see any vehicle on the side of the road. Too many times have I changed lanes only to have some knucklehead slingshot around me like a crackhead on the way to their next fix. Id like to see civilian law enforce regs like base does. 1st no seatbelt - 30 days suspension, 2nd - 90, 3rd - forever. Same with cellphone.

Grit Dog -the state of Oregon would not allow us to use ANY sort of crash truck or ANY piece of equipment to keep people from hitting us (we wanted to use our own vehicles). It was cheaper to pay out our families than to have them be sued by dumb drivers. Now the state of Kansas was another story, they have all sorts of attenuator vehicles and most are filled with sand hanging off the back of the vehicle.

Please keep in mind, the info I've provided is 3 years old. I've since moved on from that line of work. Much nicer being home.

New York stater here, yes- shoot the planners not even the DOT engineers have say over what project gets done when. thank politics for that. May I say shoot the poli- naw, nevermind.

Courtesy moves the lane if open. 10 percent of drivers think they are above the law and cause 70, yes 70 percent of accidents they may or may not be involved in. 10 percent are really wrong time and place and seem to suffer the most. I thought the fine was high, and three points for a simple lane change seemed that there may be more involved (unsafe lane change, property damage, speeding?) was not there- just observing.

There -legally- are no speed traps. One case two years ago in georgia DID have a blind zone from 55 to 25 at a flat spot in between two 6 percent grades. notorious for taking trucker rigs at the local PD and local judge. It was physically impossible to avoid due to sign placement, and that was their undoing. this is why you see the 1000 ft between repetitive speed change signs. Remember, you can do 15 mph below the limit too. speed-legally- is relative: to the point of when your vehicle lost contact with the road surface or was excessive in a plotted plane (an anomoly) so as to infer risk to others or change their response.

a current ploy for a speeding ticket in my area (college towns) is to ignore the ticket; scofflaw judgement, get a notice of suspension from DMV, THEN come to Court (9 months or so later) and say it wasn't you. Our DA will not prosecute and suggest they file a statemnt of identy theft with the state police. and you wonder why I ticked people off and retired..
the system works. it is just abused by criminals.

drive safe, the live you save will be your own.

We have a very famous "Speed Trap" in a little town I drive through to get to the marina in the summer time. They have up these HUGE signs that clearly state the speed limit and that exceeding that limit WILL NOT BE TOLERATED.

Every single time I go through there I see cars pulled over on both sides of the road being ticketed, I would not call that a speed trap, I would call it a "DUMMY TRAP"

They are very serious about keeping that stretch of road safe for their citizens, it has stores on both sides of the road and all kinds of driveways entering and exiting in all directions. Personally when I see that sign that is as big as a full sheet of plywood, I slow down and the only interaction I have had with those Officers in the last 15 years is a smile and a wave as I go by.

researching a 1970 ish Law that states a police officer cannot locate themselves behind stationary objects. (billboards at ground level, man those were great!) you could HEAR someone speeding then....

try that with a hybrid..hehehe

Spoolerman! I know that was not a strip in Georgia! and yeah, a lot could be seen then

$754 for a traffic violation!! No wonder so many people run from the cops

Only a inconsiderate moron won't move over in the next lane for a emergency vehicle or for any vehicle stopped on the highway.
