Internet connection problems

Ok guys this one has been bugging the heck out of me for about 6 months now and I cannot figure it out.

Sorry, this is a bit long.

I have a home network, on it are 3 desktop computers, 1) dedicated 16-channel surveillance DVR, computer, 2) 8-channel standalone surveillance DVR and my laptop, all are wired through a switch.

My ISP is Verizon along with my analog phone line, my DSL modem is a Westell Wirespeed supplied by the ISP, I have a Linksys/Cisco Router and a Netgear Switch.

Now here is the problem most of the time the internet works well but every night between 2:00 A.M. and from 2:08 to 2:10 A.M. my internet connection comes to a dead stop for between 8 to 10 minuets, if the computer is searching at that time it will lock up and will become completely useless for the period of time, then after 2:10 A.M. the browser is back to life and will work fine the rest of the night.

At first I thought my computer was updating its software but that is set for 6:00 A.M. but I disabled it to make sure, it was not that so I went through and disabled all of the live updates and backup software but it made no difference, all of the other functions of the computer will work normally, just not the internet.

It doesn't matter which computer I use, they all stop at 2:00 A.M. and then resume 8 to 10 minuets later.

So then I took my laptop and plugged directly into the modem to bypass all of my network and the very next day still the same thing happened, no internet, so next I replaced the modem with another new one that I had, this did not fix the problem, during this time the Power, Ready and Ethernet lights on the modem remain on solid.

My Telco line at this time seems to be clear with no static and the only device connected to it besides the modem is a cordless phone with filter.

All of the inside telco wiring is Cat-5 from the MPOE to the modem, a carryover from the old dial-up days.

If I wouldn’t have already replaced the modem I would have thought that was it but the problem still continues, it does this like clockwork, every 2:00 A.M.7 days a week, when the time changed, it also shifted 1 hour.

Ok guys, why is my ISP going down for 8 to 10 minuets every single day of the week, it is driving my nuts, I only have a very small window of no more than 10 minuets to run any test.

Both Verizon and Charter Cable are doing a lot of line work in my area and there is a lot of pollution, I can drive down the street and when I pass different locations I can hear data burst over my AM radio that blank out the reception.

Talking to Verizon customer service makes me want to break things, is the cable company doing this to make my go Broadband?

Have you ever heard of this, what do you think it is, what commondeers my internet connection every 2:00 A.M.?

try that,

Ping & trace route GOOGLE, and cut & paste that data into a word DOC.

then do it when your line is down, and see what's up.

I had DSL problems for five years, bought half dozen wireless routers, different brands,

2 or 3 DSL modems (black westell and the white one)

AT&T finally told me "go buy the $100 '2wire modem' from Best Buy and it will be fine" "or we can sell it to you for $150"

i said no, you send it to me for FREE or we terminate service NOW.

that thing works GREAT, it detects problems all the time, and just reboots & does stuff to fix itself. it's automatic.

on other hand, why are on the 'net at 2 am?

it sounds like a "daily test" ran by someone.

My best guess is you have an alarm system in the house. Maybe your using it, maybe your not, doesn't matter. Is your DSL filtered on the outside NID or are you putting filters on every jack.

If you have an alarm box and it's not filtered at the NID, my guess is your alarm box is trying to call the alarm company, the alarm captures the dial tone and dsl before the modem. I've seen this many times "if" there is an alarm and the battery is low. the alarm calls the monitoring company and says bring me a new battery, taking your dialtone and DSL off line during this process. Do you have dialtone during this window of time?

Good luck.
